For more than two decades, Lettuce have brought a new vitality to
classic funk, matching their smooth and soulful grooves with a
hip-hop-inspired urgency. Their latest offering, Mt. Crushmore EP,
showcases the exceptional musicianship and improvisational, rhythmic
genius that fans have come to expect. Once again co-produced by
Grammy-nominated producer, Joel Hamilton (Elvis Costello, Highly
Suspect, Pretty Lights) the EP is comprised of seven previously
unreleased tracks from their acclaimed full-length studio album
Crush.
Acclaimed single ôThe Love You Left Behindö is a funky take on the
classic tune. Featuring the gritty vocals of blues siren Alecia
Chakour, the track was included in NPRÆs All Songs Considered and is
a crowd favorite at their live shows. From the commanding horns on
the title track, to the sultry grooves on ô116th St.,ö to the sonic
intrigue of ôElephant Walkö and the outer space-like funk of
ôRansome,ö Mt. Crushmore is a psychedelic journey that only Lettuce
could navigate.
Comprised of a stellar group of musicians û Drummer Adam Deitch,
guitarists Adam Smirnoff and Eric Krasno, bassist Erick ôJesusö
Coomes, keyboardist Neal Evans, keyboardist and vocalist Nigel Hall,
saxophonist Ryan Zoidis, and trumpet player Eric Bloomùthe band
consistently displays an applauded mastery of their respective
crafts. Blending together these talents in a sound distinctly their
own, Lettuce has garnered praised by the likes of New York Times,
NPR, Billboard, Consequence of Sound, Relix, Red Bull Music, Live
For Live Music, and more.
According to the band, it is a sense of unity and togetherness that
has much to do with the camaraderie thatÆs only intensified over the
lifespan of the band. Formed in 1992, when several band members
attended a summer program at BostonÆs Berklee College of Music as
teenagers, Lettuce was founded on a shared love of legendary funk
artists like Earth, Wind & Fire and Tower of Power. After returning
to Berklee as undergrads in 1994, Lettuce started playing in local
clubs and steadily built up a following that soon extended to cities
across the country and then throughout the world. Releasing their
studio debut Outta Here in 2002, its follow-up Rage! in 2009, Fly in
2012, and Crush in 2015, the band has dedicated their time to
balancing their prolific touring with involvement in a host of other
musical endeavors (including Evans and KrasnoÆs role as founding
members of acclaimed soul/jazz trio Soulive).
In recent years, Lettuce have watched their fanbase expand as
theyÆve hit bigger and bigger stages. Selling out shows across the
country, they have truly earned their name as a canÆt-miss live act.
