│║ ║ │
│║ This band can do no wrong. Every Orden Ogan ║ │
│║ album is a veritable gem waiting to be ║ │
│║ discovered by the unwary power metal fan. ║ │
│║ Although the progressive tinges of previous ║ │
│║ albums like Vale have been diluted somewhat, the ║ │
│║ song lengths remain around the 6-minute mark but ║ │
│║ lose absolutely no staying power. The melodies ║ │
│║ have gotten hookier, the production quality ║ │
│║ sharper, the choruses bigger and the riffs ║ │
│║ heavier. I was still reeling from the dark ║ │
│║ victory of Ravenhead when it was announced the ║ │
│║ German quartet would be releasing their sixth ║ │
│║ full-length on the ever-reliable AFM Records. ║ │
│║ Like a moth to a flame I was drawn, and ║ │
│║ subsequently ignited by the sheer impact of ║ │
│║ Gunmen - another weighty, extensive, domineering ║ │
│║ slab of folk-influenced power metal drenched in ║ │
│║ both glory and sorrow. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ There are two factors I wait for upon the ║ │
│║ release of new Orden Ogan material: the heavy ║ │
│║ riff and the massive chorus. Therefore, within ║ │
│║ two minutes of the opening track "Gunman", we ║ │
│║ get both, fired into our feeble faces like a ║ │
│║ blunderbuss. Once the cheese-tastic synth brass ║ │
│║ has passed, a brief guitar lick leads into a ║ │
│║ pummelling riff that rips off your scalp and ║ │
│║ punches you in the stomach. Then, when we're ║ │
│║ done with the verse and bridge (killing time ║ │
│║ 'til the chorus obviously!), the colossal cry of ║ │
│║ 'IIIII AAAAM THE GUNMAAAAAAN!!' bathes you in ║ │
│║ glorious power metal splendour. That's the one ║ │
│║ thing these Germans always totally nail: those ║ │
│║ enormous layered vocals that make one man sound ║ │
│║ like a thousand. Skip to the chorus of any track ║ │
│║ on this record, and you will be completely ║ │
│║ engulfed in heavenly choral vocals that quickly ║ │
│║ become your favourite thing about this band. The ║ │
│║ other thing you'll instantly enjoy will be the ║ │
│║ palm-muted open E-string chugging that permeates ║ │
│║ every track at some point. Those no-frills, ║ │
│║ one-note, balls-to-the-wall riffs demand instant ║ │
│║ headbanging, and Gunmen contains plenty! ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Mainman Seeb is on fire in terms of songwriting, ║ │
│║ vocal performance and guitar work. His stunning ║ │
│║ production job cements him as one of the most ║ │
│║ hardworking artists in the European power metal ║ │
│║ scene. He effortlessly commands his way through ║ │
│║ ten heroic anthems with gusto - the majority of ║ │
│║ which could easily become future classics due to ║ │
│║ their sheer memorability. The only exception is ║ │
│║ the slightly subdued "Down Here", which, whilst ║ │
│║ still a decent song, is definitely a backwards ║ │
│║ step both in melody and brevity. All three ║ │
│║ singles were the perfect choices to initiate ║ │
│║ audiences into the atmosphere this album would ║ │
│║ create. Both "Come With Me To The Other Side" ║ │
│║ and especially "Fields Of Sorrow" are awash with ║ │
│║ Orden Ogan's characteristic melancholy - both ║ │
│║ dealing with themes of loss, but in a ║ │
│║ beautifully triumphant manner. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The real bangers on Gunmen are the galloping, ║ │
│║ heavy as hell numbers like "Vampire In Ghost ║ │
│║ Town" and "One Last Chance", the latter of which ║ │
│║ open with an irresistibly hefty riff. Speaking ║ │
│║ of riffs the groove of "Ashen Rain" makes it one ║ │
│║ of the best riffs of 2017, and that's before we ║ │
│║ even get to the badass attitude of the chorus. ║ │
│║ All incredibly minor faults considered, the ║ │
│║ Germans totally defy any naysayers with this ║ │
│║ album - and there is absolutely no reason not to ║ │
│║ own it as a power metal fan. If you like your ║ │
│║ metal catchy and melodic, but with no skimping ║ │
│║ on heaviness, delving into Orden Ogan's back ║ │
│║ catalogue will do you many favours. Hail the ║ │
