│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The French power metal scene is clearly not the ║ │
│║ most famous of all French metal scenes. Few are ║ │
│║ the bands that gained a big success over the ║ │
│║ years, such as Fairyland, Heavenly or Nightmare. ║ │
│║ In spite of this, France is the home of a quite ║ │
│║ important scene of important underground power ║ │
│║ metal bands, such as Hamka, Qantice, Manigance, ║ │
│║ Dyslesia or Galderia. But quality doesn't rhyme ║ │
│║ with notoriety: each of these bands has ║ │
│║ something interesting to say, even if they ║ │
│║ remain in the darkness. Let's highlight one of ║ │
│║ them today, Galderia, with their new album ║ │
│║ "Return of the Cosmic Men"! ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Galderia is a French power metal band which ║ │
│║ includes some symphonic elements in their music, ║ │
│║ such as bells or pads. The band was formed in ║ │
│║ 2006 before splitting up in 2009 for several ║ │
│║ months. From 2008 to 2010 they released a couple ║ │
│║ of demos and EPs and gained a bit of success ║ │
│║ with their 2010 EP "Rise, Legion of Free Men". ║ │
│║ They released their first album in 2012, ║ │
│║ entitled "The Universality". In July 2017, they ║ │
│║ released their second album, "Return of the ║ │
│║ Cosmic Men". They have a deal with Massacre ║ │
│║ Records, which released their new album. All ║ │
│║ along their short career, they coloured their ║ │
│║ music with pretty joyful and positive emotions ║ │
│║ that may remind the happiness of Freedom Call or ║ │
│║ Power Quest. Today we're going to talk about ║ │
│║ these emotions and melodies that we may find in ║ │
│║ this album, but also about the philosophical ║ │
│║ messages conveyed in the songs. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Here's a little disclaimer, at first: I'm going ║ │
│║ to talk about philosophy but in the most ║ │
│║ objective way. This band has a deep ║ │
│║ philosophical meaning behind its lyrics and its ║ │
│║ fantasy themes and I'm going to talk a bit about ║ │
│║ it. However, it will not influence my judgment ║ │
│║ on the album. I am reviewing the music and its ║ │
│║ quality while evoking the philosophical thoughts ║ │
│║ of singer and songwriter Seb in order to give to ║ │
│║ my review a bit more of interest. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Let's begin by the philosophical aspect of the ║ │
│║ album, then. "Return of the Cosmic Men" appears ║ │
│║ to follow on from their first album "The ║ │
│║ Universality". In order to have a better ║ │
│║ understanding of the ideas evoked in this new ║ │
│║ album, let's talk a bit first about the ones in ║ │
│║ their debut album. "The Universality", called ║ │
│║ "L'UniversalitΘ" in French, is a philosophical ║ │
│║ concept broached by singer Seb when he was 17, ║ │
│║ where, according to him, the universe is an ║ │
│║ ocean of energy where every single entity, ║ │
│║ concept and thing form a whole unit: this is the ║ │
│║ universality of creation. The universe is full ║ │
│║ of energy where each element has its own ║ │
│║ specific vibration, which creates an apparent ║ │
│║ separation among the entities. When we take a ║ │
│║ general look at our universe, we can see this ║ │
│║ unification between things, like an ocean: when ║ │
│║ we have a general look at it, we just see a ║ │
│║ bunch of water, but when we take a more careful ║ │
│║ look at it, we can see each drop of water that ║ │
│║ composes this ocean - this is a metaphor, of ║ │
│║ course, we cannot really see each drop of water. ║ │
│║ So, this concept of "unification of the things" ║ │
│║ is the key element that leads the album "The ║ │
│║ Universality". But what about "Return of the ║ │
│║ Cosmic Men"? Here again, it's a philosophical ║ │
│║ metaphor. The "Cosmic Men" are not really men, ║ │
│║ nor entities, but ideas that are rising again in ║ │
│║ the mind of man - ║ │
│║ that's why it's a "return". The fact that this ║ │
│║ is a new album and the fact that our world is ║ │
│║ changing, made this idea of "universal ║ │
│║ consciousness" to come back in our minds. It's a ║ │
│║ sort of realisation that people are making ║ │
│║ around the world. All of this, of course, is ║ │
│║ just an approach and I won't enter into deep ║ │
│║ themes because it's not really the place. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Let's jump into what really matters here: the ║ │
│║ musical content. If I had only one word to ║ │
│║ describe this album it would be "joyful". This ║ │
│║ album emanates a lot of positive feelings, which ║ │
│║ are essentially showed in the opening song ║ │
│║ "Shining Unity", which is my favourite track of ║ │
│║ this album. It starts with one of the most epic ║ │
│║ intros I've ever heard, a couple of great riffs ║ │
│║ mixed with a lot of symphonic element - in fact, ║ │
│║ this intro is the instrumental part of the ║ │
│║ chorus. There are also choirs and bells. I ║ │
│║ really love these instruments when they are ║ │
│║ mixed with power metal sounds, it makes them ║ │
│║ even more epic. The song, in general, stays ║ │
│║ energetic, with beautiful and melodic verses, ║ │
│║ where everything goes fast. This is what I like ║ │
│║ about this song: it's a typical speed metal song ║ │
│║ where there is no place for boredom, where the ║ │
│║ melodic and epic parts are played one after ║ │
│║ another. But the best part of this song remains ║ │
│║ the chorus, which is repeated quite often. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Speaking of powerful melodies, there are some ║ │
│║ interesting things to say about "Celestial ║ │
│║ Harmony", "High Up in the Air", "Legions of ║ │
│║ Light", "Return of the Cosmic Men" and "Wake Up ║ │
│║ the World 2.0". All of these songs made their ║ │
│║ interest on powerful and catchy melodies, in the ║ │
│║ voice like in the riffs, in the verses like in ║ │
│║ the choruses. "Celestial Harmony" is a lively ║ │
│║ song with a pretty nice acoustic intro with ║ │
│║ melodic verses and one of the catchiest chorus ║ │
│║ of the album. "High Up in the Air" is even more ║ │
│║ chorus-based because the song begins with it. In ║ │
│║ a more general way, this song is very dynamic ║ │
│║ and happy with melodic verses. "Legions of ║ │
│║ Light" has also a dynamic intro, like in ║ │
│║ "Shining Unity" and also has a very melodic and ║ │
│║ epic chorus, with a lot of choirs. "Wake Up the ║ │
│║ World 2.0" is a quite particular song because ║ │
│║ it's a trance remix of one of their song, "Wake ║ │
│║ up the World". It has a lot more of pads and ║ │
│║ synthetic elements than in the original version. ║ │
│║ As I said once, I am not a fan of trance and ║ │
│║ metal music mixed, but this time both musical ║ │
│║ genres go well together. In a more general way, ║ │
│║ this song brings another whole aspect of the ║ │
│║ atmosphere of the former song, which is pretty ║ │
│║ nice. I'm going to stop talking about these ║ │
│║ powerful melodies by speaking about the ║ │
│║ eponymous track, "Return of the Cosmic Men", ║ │
│║ which is my favourite song of the album after ║ │
│║ "Shining Unity". This song has one of the most ║ │
│║ beautiful intros I've ever heard, with a very ║ │
│║ calm and melodic female choir with lovely ║ │
│║ whistlings. Overall, this song is quite calm, ║ │
│║ with its first verse, and has an epic and ║ │
│║ beautiful chorus repeated several times. The ║ │
│║ biggest advantage of this song is its break at ║ │
│║ the end, where we can hear once again the ║ │
│║ wonderful intro. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The instruments are also well balanced with the ║ │
│║ melodies and the emotions of the songs. In ║ │
│║ "Shining Unity", where everything goes fast, ║ │
│║ there is a lot of tremolo picking, which goes ║ │
│║ well with the global atmosphere of the song. In ║ │
│║ "Living Forevermore", a more calm song with a ║ │
│║ slow intro with piano and clean guitar, the ║ │
│║ drumming will be more appropriated, slower than ║ │
│║ in the precedent songs. We find also this very ║ │
│║ good and appropriated drumming in "High Up in ║ │
│║ the Air", especially in the chorus, where it ║ │
│║ sounds like a typical traditional heavy metal ║ │
│║ drum set, which makes the song more positive and ║ │
│║ more cheerful. This emotion created with the mix ║ │
│║ of the happy chorus and the heavy drumming ║ │
│║ matches perfectly the overall atmosphere of the ║ │
│║ album.s ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ In conclusion, "Return of the Cosmic Men" is the ║ │
│║ perfect album for fans of the happiest and most ║ │
│║ positive side of power metal. The great mixing ║ │
│║ offers a good sound quality and makes the album ║ │
│║ even more enjoyable. The instruments are ║ │
│║ cleverly organized with the appropriate mood of ║ │
│║ the songs, which shows us that the musicians ║ │
│║ perfectly know them and that they are not just ║ │
│║ guys who play heavy metal music for fun. The ║ │
│║ happiness, the epicness of the chorus of songs ║ │
│║ like "Shining Unity", "High Up in the Air" or ║ │
│║ "Return of the Cosmic Men" will make you listen ║ │
│║ to these songs at least twice or more. Some ║ │
│║ other things aren't perfect, however, and the ║ │
│║ band still needs to improve their ability to ║ │
│║ catch the listener's ears, in some songs, in ║ │
│║ order to have the perfect album, but the overall ║ │
│║ result already shows that they're not far from ║ │
│║ it. ║ │
