Marianas is the band that almost never happened. While
recording their first CD, the Lincoln act had no drummer, no
bassist and no plans of ever playing live. "It didn't dawn on
us to play a live show while recording," guitarist and vocalist
Ryan Dee said. Most of their songs weren't written for
performances. In fact, many elements, including the drumming
and bass, were rendered on band member Aaron Coleman's laptop.
"Then we realized we were never going to move 500 records out
of our basement without playing any shows," Coleman said.
The original band - Dee, Coleman and guitarist Aaron Grauer -
recruited bassist Malcom Miles and drummer Tom Tollefsen. And
their heavily electronic music morphed into instrumental
performance with electronics sparsely layered in. But the term
"electronic" shouldn't make people think "techno," band members
said. "Any time I mentioned electronic elements of the band,
that's what people think," Dee said. "We're actually more
ambient and airy." It's true, Marianas bears no resemblance to
techno. Rather, they compare themselves to Broken Social Scene,
Radiohead or Sigur Ros without vocals. "It's more in tune with
classic composition," Grauer said. "It's more making music,
then writing songs."
