Charlie Parker has had many admirers and his influence can be
detected in numerous styles, but few have been as avid a disciple as
SONNY STITT. There was almost note-for-note imitation in several
early Stitt solos, and the closeness remained until Stitt began
de-emphasizing the alto in favor of the tenor, on which he artfully
combined the influences of Parker and Lester Young. Stitt gradually
developed his own sound and style, though he was never far from
Parker on any alto solo.
In the '60s, when John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman were defining
the concept of a jazz avant-garde, few knowledgeable observers would
have guessed that in another 30 years the music's mainstream would
virtually bypass their innovations, in favor of the hard bop style
that free jazz had apparently supplanted. As it turned out, many
listeners who had come to love jazz as a sophisticated manifestation
of popular music were unable to accept the extreme esotericism of
the avant-garde; their tastes were rooted in the core elements of
"swing" and "blues," characteristics found in abundance in the music
of THE JAZZ MESSENGERS, the quintessential hard bop ensemble led by
drummer ART BLAKEY.
Stitt joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers for hard-swinging LP "In
Walked Sonny", and he fits quite comfortably with the quintet (which
includes the leader/drummer, trumpeter Bill Hardman, Dave Schnitter
on tenor, pianist Walter Davis, Jr, and bassist Chin Suzuki). In
addition to the title cut (a Sonny Stitt original), Stitt is in top
form on "Blues March", "It Might As Well Be Spring", Freddie
Hubbard's "Birdlike", and "I Can't Get Started"; he sits out on
Davis' "Ronnie's A Dynamite Lady". The members of the Messengers
sound inspired by Stitt's presence, and everyone is in fine form on
this excellent hard bop session.
Released in 1975 on the small independent label Sonet Records, and
among the most obscure recordings made by the musicians involved in
the project, here's the 24-bit remaster from 2004.
