As the leader of the seminal pub rockers Brinsley Schwarz, a producer, and
a solo artist, Nick Lowe held considerable influence over the development
of punk rock. With the Brinsleys, Lowe began a back-to-basics movement that
flowered into punk rock in the late 70's. As the house producer for Stiff,
he recorded many seminal records by the likes of the Damned, Elvis
Costello, and the Pretenders. His rough, ragged production style earned him
the nickname "Basher" and also established the amateurish, D.I.Y.
aesthetics of punk.
Abandoning the Cowboy Outfit but not roots-rock, Lowe followed the winning
"The Rose Of England" with the amiable but muddled "Pinker And Prouder Than
Previous". Working with the same blend of classic pop, rock & roll, and
country-rock, Lowe gets things off to a roaring start with the driving
"(You're My) Wildest Dream", but the record quickly bogs down in averagee
material.
Many of the songs are certainly not bad, yet they rarely distinguish
themselves from each other - only "Lover's Jamboree", John Hiatt's "Love
Gets Strange" and Graham Parker's "Black Lincoln Continental" stand out.
That doesn't necessarily make "Pinker And Prouder Than Previous" a bad
record. Since Lowe is a gifted songwriter and talented bandleader; he can
keep things engaging even when he's not at the top of his form, which is
the case with "Pinker And Prouder".
Yep Roc is now releasing all Lowe's album's in remastered editions. Perhaps
Lowe's most varied release, "Pinker And Prouder Than Previous" was recorded
in Austin, TX, the famed Rockfield Studios in Wales, and in London. Tapping
everyone from his current associates Bobby Irwin, Paul Carrack and Martin
Belmont to the Fabulous Thunderbirds and The Men They Couldn't Hang to back
him up, this mix of originals and covers actually predicts the stripped
down style that revived his career a few years later.
