In Hour 2 Rio de Janeiro bass producers Omulu & IOIA step
up with a special tribute mix to Elza Soares, one of Brazil's
most iconic artists. Omulu has been hailed by Diplo as one of
Brazil's most exciting bass and baile-funk producers, and here
in collaboration with his partner Glaucia Mayer (IOIA) he
offers a tribute mix to Elza featuring tracks from her
seven-decade long career plus gems from artists who inspired
her as well as contemporary Brazilian artists she has influenced.
"It's hard to underestimate the importance and influence Elza
Soares has on Brazilian music", says Omulu. "She has an incredible
musical oeuvre that stretches back over seven decades mixing samba
with jazz, soul, funk, hip hop and electronica, whilst her
life-story is a rags-to-riches rollercoaster of triumphs and
tragedies that has made her a voice for Brazil's repressed female,
black, gay and working class populations. With this mix we wanted
to pay tribute to her life in music featuring tracks from throughout
her career. We included some of her first recordings as well as
classics from samba pioneers Clementina de Jesus, Dalva de Oliveira
and Lupicínio Rodrigues, who composed Elza's first hit "Se Acaso
Você Chegasse". We have featured tracks from other female singers
from the 60s/70s such as Aparecida and Georgette who like Elza were
positive black female role models, and then we bring the mix bang up
to date with tracks from Brazilian artists such as Meta Meta,
MC Carol & Rico Dalasam who are continuing the fight for equality
for black and LGBT artists, plus remixes from myself, Gilles Peterson
and Marginal Men of tracks from Elza's latest release on Mais Um Discos"
