Since first coming to light on ManchesterÆs SMAK
series, Ola BergmanÆs production and output has
continued to grow in stature with every release. æThe
Great Family HotelÆ is a sorely missed release round
here, an integral part of many dj sets in this part
of the world and subject to an instantaneous sell
out, never to be repressed. Until now, where all the
defining tracks are included on this most serviceable
overview of BergmanÆs gifts. æPanettoneÆ layers
introspective strings atop a steady disco shuffle : a
hefty, unusual, building balearic tune. æVultureÆs
endÆ showed up near the climax of Ellen AllienÆs æMy
ParadeÆ mix, and its calculated and cool electroid
bounce still sounds mighty fine. The first exclusive
we come to is æNo PolicyÆ, like a prime early New
Order outtake, where Hooky wasnÆt allowed in the
studio, allowing Barney and Steven to get busy with
the machines in earnest. æNo policyÆ could also be
unknowingly mistaken for a classic early Newcleus
outatke, thereÆs the same epic sense of outer space,
near desolation and yet finding effortless natural
uplift in bass and melody. ôPseudocorpö rocks a
militant hip hop drive and detuned synths - Boards of
Canada living it up with the original Human League
for some premium retro-futurist action û fabulous
stuff. More unreleased gems surface, in the shape of
ôOtra VueltaöÆs rim shot electrofunk, genuinely
riveting stuff. æDrivis IIÆ provides fitting closure
to a large album, deep anthemic chords, a percussive
shuffle creating an emotional, highly charged coda,
from a producer weÆre sure youÆll hear a lot more
from in coming years.
