Russian producer Igor O. Vlasov has been on the slow burn for a while now.
With releases hearkening back to the mid 2000Æs, he heads up release number
144 on the Lucidflow imprint with a quartet of rough-hewn dub sounds. Title
track æIsland Of HopeÆ demonstrates this with a keen dance floor focus,
starting off the deep dub groove with a clicky kick, before rolling in a
heavier set of percussion over the top. This creates a distinct gearshift
in preparation for the melodic touches and acid line that drifts in over
the top. æCatacombsÆ is similar in intent, taking a good three minutes to
work out an understated groove before hitting in with a warm saturated
kick. This is a track that begs to have a long layering mix for maximum
impact. Following this is æDonÆt KnowÆ, and again it is the kick that
demands full attention. The secondary kick in this instance is raw, almost
unwieldy, as if it was torn by hand and physically glued onto the mix. It
roughens up an otherwise whimsical track where watery melodies rub up
against rickety dub chords. Finishing off in techy mood is æParallaxÆ. Here
the tempo is upped and a wriggly bassline is deployed before an almost
Orbital-esque melody takes over for the finale.
