│║ Yet another totally unique European act have ║ │
│║ passed me by! Wind Rose hail from northern Italy ║ │
│║ and, unlike both their moniker and fellow ║ │
│║ countrymen suggest, are one of the more ║ │
│║ intriguing bands of the power/progressive ilk. ║ │
│║ Saying that, I'm almost tempted to veer away ║ │
│║ from the power metal tag altogether because, ║ │
│║ despite galloping tempos and general pomp, the ║ │
│║ quintet could almost pass for folk metal. Having ║ │
│║ already labelled themselves 'dwarven metal', and ║ │
│║ utilizing many folk instruments through the ║ │
│║ keyboards, this categorization is equally valid. ║ │
│║ However, doubling back on myself, the artist ║ │
│║ that bears most resemblance to Wind Rose would ║ │
│║ be French symphonic power metallers Fairyland. ║ │
│║ Not only has vocalist Francesco Cavalieri ║ │
│║ recently become the new frontman for Fairyland, ║ │
│║ but the progressive compositions on new record ║ │
│║ Stonehymn could've easily been penned by Phil ║ │
│║ Giordana himself. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ This album works on two levels: the overall ║ │
│║ atmosphere will hook you in with its icy tone ║ │
│║ and testosterone-fueled imagery (clearly ║ │
│║ influenced by the dwarven stories in Tolkien ║ │
│║ lore). Then, after a few listens, the melody ║ │
│║ lines, which at first seemed too complex, will ║ │
│║ start to embed themselves in your head. Not only ║ │
│║ are the tunes memorable as hell, but they are ║ │
│║ spouted forth with such manly fervour that each ║ │
│║ gruff chant and gang-shout become irresistible. ║ │
│║ You can almost feel hairs sprouting on your ║ │
│║ chest when roaring "KHAZAD AI-MENU!!" in the ║ │
│║ bridge of "To Erebor". This track was absolutely ║ │
│║ the correct choice to release as a first single, ║ │
│║ easily being the most accessible on the album. ║ │
│║ The chorus is irresistible with its cry of "Heya ║ │
│║ heya haaa!" and simple, but effective, folk ║ │
│║ melodies. The other pre-released song is the ║ │
│║ bombastic "The Wolves' Call", perfectly ║ │
│║ positioned on the album to pick up the pace ║ │
│║ after the atmospheric "The Animist". ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ With a texture as thick as this, it's a shame ║ │
│║ the bass doesn't get much room to be flamboyant ║ │
│║ (except for a brief run in the middle of "The ║ │
│║ Wolves' Call") - but the orchestration is full ║ │
│║ to the brim with points of interest: a blast of ║ │
│║ horns here, a run of strings there... When ║ │
│║ combined with the distant mixed choir, it ║ │
│║ provides so many contrapuntal melody/harmony ║ │
│║ lines that it's impossible to be bored when ║ │
│║ listening to Stonehymn. My personal favourite ║ │
│║ track has to be "Fallen Timbers". Not just ║ │
│║ because it throws in some blast-beats here and ║ │
│║ there, but for the chorus which is absolutely ║ │
│║ captivating as it gradually accelerates towards ║ │
│║ its climax. The cheeky accordion is also ║ │
│║ appreciated! I cannot recommend this album ║ │
│║ enough to fans of both power and folk metal - ║ │
│║ but patience is an absolute must. Stonehymn will ║ │
│║ grow upon multiple repeated listens. The whole ║ │
│║ record is a journey, with more paths and layers ║ │
│║ to discover every time you travel with Wind ║ │
│║ Rose. ║ │
