BIO - Can Costa (aka Ricky Ryan)
Ricky has been djing for almost five years.
Although, in his short experience due to a relentless seek
for quality, he has certainly progressed at a remarkably
fast pace.
Like many successful DJs, Ricky comes from a varying
contemporary musical background, filled with different
genres - and ends up with funky, disco, electro, breaks,
techno & house music grooves.
This musical background is supported by guitar, piano and
vocal studies taken throughout his childhood, as well as
completing three years of jazz and contemporary music
research.
Right after his 21st birthday, Ricky moved from Argentina to
Los Angeles (USA) searching for absolute independence. He
purchased his first turntables and mixer with the money
earned working 8 days a week at bars and catering events.
Later on, he ended up sharing decks at the legendary
'Sketchpad' after-hours with DJ Taylor, known as the
American response to Sasha.
Ricky decided to go back to Buenos Aires (Argentina) and
looked forward to growing into the local scene.
Along with Our House Promotions, he had the chance to share
the Dj booth @ Punta del Este (Uruguay) with Andy Holt (aka
Redanka) & Chris Bourne (aka Tarrentella) from RIP records,
Kelvin Andrews (the legend also known as Soul Mekanik, Sound
5 and part of Sure is Pure) & Paolo Mojo from Fabric UK.
Back in Bs. As., he mixed with italian star Francesco Farfa,
spanish dj/producer Angel Molina & Bill Patrick from ARC,
New York USA. Ricky also played with almost every local
talent like Alex Russo, Facu Carri, Cristobal Paz, Big
Fabio, Dj Paul, Diego RoK, Diego Cid, Gustavo Lopez, Aldo
Haydar, Romina Cohn, Miguel Silver and along with our very
own local champion Hernan Cattaneo, who described Ricky's
first production work as refreshing and technically very
tight.
Music is Freedom (www.musicisfreedom.com), the British label
owned by Paolo Mojo (www.paolomojo.com) and formerly known
as Entermusic, signed "Who Cares?" (Original & Smight┤s
Special Place remix) by Can Costa, Ricky's alter ego. This
release received huge support from great international djs
such as Satoshi Tomiie, Adam Freeland, Hernan Cattaneo,
Chris Fortier, Steve Gerrard, Marcelo Castelli, Echomen,
Steve Parry, Dan Goodall, Soul Mekanik, Jerry Bonham, Joshua
Collins, Ryan Papa & the man himself, Sasha. Also obtained
great comments at worldwide record stores & has been
reviewed @ PROG SOUNDS

es.asp). Ricky has been invited to the acclaimed internet
based PROTON RADIO (www.protonradio.com), both as a Dj &
Producer, to showcase at Smight's show @ PROFLUENCE & Jay
Epoch's @ PARTICLES, will be guest as FEATURED ARTIST soon.
He has also remixed American dj/producer Stroud for Mining
Vinyl Recordings USA, along with Argentina's Dj Paul
(Clubland, PACHA). This tune called "Chobru" has been
charted in BALANCE Record Pool by Chris Fortier, and has
also been included in Jondi & Spesh's and Chris Micali's
charts. Also supported by Josh Wink, producer Greg Benz,
fine reviewer dj Chloe @ Sound Bytes
(www.progressive-sounds.com) & mixed several times by Hernan
Cattaneo, who's very interested in Can Costa's latest
productions, including most of these in his weekly radio
show Resident @ Metro 95.1 fm
Ricky reached professional skills on music production
workshops in Barcelona (Spain), where he's been sharing the
line up along with Steve Bug, Martin Landsky & Edvard at The
Edge @ Otto Zutz as part of the Poker Flat World Tour. He's
also visited Moscow (Russia), for a gig @ PYRAMID BAR & Lima
(Peru) @ URBAN ALIEN.
Back in Argentina he played with well known djs & producers
like Echomen from the UK (HoojChoons recs), Joshua Collins
from the USA (Grayhound recs), Ryan Papa from Australia
(Stigma recs - www.residentadvisor.com.au monthly RA
Columnist) & Argentinean Dj MOS from Barcelona's Pissed off
recordings @ CHOCOLATE in Mar del Plata seaside city. Ricky
has also been the headline dj @ BLUE VELVET & MEI in Rosario
many times last year - gaining much recognition outside of
Buenos Aires.
Ricky visited Asunci≤n (Paraguay) & Montevideo (Uruguay),
where he had great shows & will go back soon for more gigs
every two months due to the amazing feedback he got from the
foreign crowd.
He also has been guest dj at AET 10th anniversary party @
PACHA, Buenos Aires's greatest dance floor in Argentina &
known around the world as one of the best clubs on earth. He
had the chance to share his music with around 4.000 people
going crazy. This has been his best experience thus far.
Ricky Ryan played at BUE, a huge festival in Argentina with
an amazing line up of international artists such as Massive
Attack, Rinocerose, Andy Fletcher (Depeche Mode), FC Kahuna,
The Human League, Herbalizer, Junior Sanchez, Ashley
Casselle, Slacker & loads of local talents.
Had a tour travelling Europe where he played in Spain
(Barcelona, Pamplona & Ibiza), London, Ireland, Holanda
(along with Frederik from Pako & Deep Architecture),
Lithuania & Russia once again.
Right after he came back from his first gig in Sao Paulo,
Brasil for UpFront Sounds, Ricky played in the 4th edition
of Creamfields in Argentina - along a huge line up of local
and international djs such as James Zabiela, Darren Emerson,
Groove Armada, Paul Oakenfold, Deep Dish, Hernan Cattaneo,
Jimmy Van M, Plump Djs, Dub Pistols, Tom Middleton & Erick
Morillo - to name a few.
Recently visited MΘxico where he played 4 gigs in different
cities along up & coming dj/producer Derek Howell (Bedrock).
Also he was invited to play at Smirnoff Experience in
Venezuela where he warmed up the dancefloor before Kings of
Tomorrow & John Kelly (Cream, Liverpool) for 3000 people, in
a festival for around 8000 total. Later he played along well
known Circulation.
Ricky joined B-Side's parties and festivals to play again in
Pacha Buenos Aires, where he shared the booth with dj &
producer Rowan Blades aka Breeder, Idiots, Pariah from Uk.
The line up included also known bands & artists in Argentina
like Emmanuel Horvilleur, Capri, Aldo Haydar & local fine
talents Hernan Cerbello, Leonardo Donato, Lucas Abadi & Paul
Dolan.
On december 25th of 2004, Ricky Ryan played once more with
Rowan Blades at big field in Rosario city along known local
artists Martφn Bonansea, Franco Cinelli y Nico Purman - for
thousands of people. A week later he played on New years Eve
in Ecuador sharing line up with many international artists
like promoter & dj Kam (Global Unity Movement, Los Angeles).
Ricky visited Peru for second time, where he played with
local talents, djs & producers Israel Vich & Christian
Berger (Rocksteady, MIF recs).
This summer season in Punta del Este, Uruguay - he has been
invited to warm up well known Justin Robertson from Uk at
Mint Club, where he played together with his partner & known
local dj Martin Lamelas. They both were asked by resident dj
German Rovira - who played a great set of deep & funky
techno - to also mix for the last 2 hours. Ricky & Martin
had an amazing nite hard to forget ever, playing back 2 back
for a crowd going mad till sunrise.
Can Costa Featured Artist Breaks Records! On February 2nd,
Ricky's Featured Artist mix for Proton Radio reached over
1,000 listeners. This was the first time for listener levels
to reach this bench mark.
Nowadays, Ricky spends most of his time producing music and
promoting events, not to mention djing; his latest tunes &
edits have received much support from great djs and
producers such as Lee Burridge, Desyn Masiello, Luke Fair,
Paolo Mojo, Kosmas Epsilon, Shiloh, Subsky & Yunus, to name
a few.
