BIO - Paul Louth
The London DJ circuit is tough cookie to crack. There are
about 6 million wannabe DJs û 90% armed with their latest
HMV recommendations and regular Monday night slots at
faux-American theme bars and cardboard Gastro pubs, 10% who
actually have a clue. Because making it in London is not
just about talent or how upfront your record collection is,
itÆs about having the right personality and knowing how to
make your own luck.
Paul Louth knows this, and itÆs why he is one of the most
prominent names on the London circuit. Having held down a
3-year residency with Prologue (two years at The Cross, one
at The Egg, and quoted in DJMag as ôthe ultimate club night
for people who want a good night out with a credible music
policyö), heÆs enjoyed one of the most sought after jobs in
the capital. In fact, while most DJs would swap their mint
condition original pressing of Marshall JeffersonÆs æMove
Your BodyÆ for the chance to play five minutes at The Cross,
Paul played there every month for two years. Few DJs can
boast that on their CV.
Prologue promoter Harvey actually offered Paul his first gig
after hearing one of his mix CDÆs, then promptly snapped him
up as main room resident after that very gig.
ôI offered Paul his residency at Prologue after his first
gig as not only did he rock it,ö says Harvey, ôbut he also
showed huge potential for the future - itÆs a decision IÆm
glad I made.ö
ItÆs little surprise really. Having run Wire (the official
Bedrock pre-party) for two years, John Digweed invited Paul
to record a guest mix for his Kiss FM show. But PaulÆs quick
to ditch the prog house associations a pre-party for Bedrock
might enlist. A fan of the minimal sound championed by the
likes of Magda, Richie Hawtin and Steve Bug, Paul plays a
sharp mix of underground house and techno. The kind of
filthy sordid carry on that has not only won him gigs at
Fabric and a raft of London gigs (The End, Bedrock, Canvas,
Junktion, etc), but as far a field as Miami (where he was
featured in the April 2003 issue of DJmag), New York,
Poland, Sweden, Spain, Norway, Serbia and Turkey.
ThatÆs not to mention his two-year residency on
Groovetech.com radio and his current æWire presentsÆ show on
ProtonRadio.com (every 2nd and 4th Monday if you were
wondering).
Yet for Paul, itÆs not about being the next superstar DJ. He
understands that maintaining a high-profile residency in
London is always going to be his top priority - itÆs the
place where you have the most freedom to experiment and
develop as a DJ. As Harvey recognises, itÆs PaulÆs flexible
approach and positive attitude that makes him one of the
most outstanding residents on the London club circuit. So
whether heÆs playing a supporting role or headlining, as the
Prologue faithful will tell you, they donÆt come much better
than Paul Louth.
BIO - Matt Tolfrey
Matt Tolfrey's approach to djing is simple, work hard for
what you want to achieve but make sure you always have a
good time doing it. Whilst growing up in Bahrain in the
relative cultural seclusion of an Ex-pat community, his
elder brother assaulted his consciousness with a host of mix
tapes from Ibiza and a wealth of early nineties material
from the likes of reigning DJ supreme, Sasha. It was an
initiation that instilled in Matt a sense of the way music
can reach people regardless of circumstance. Moving back to
the UK at 16 he was able to invest in a pair of decks and
soon got a slot playing in a Worcester bar. Upon taking a
year out after finishing school, Matt travelled Australia
and, taking his newly gained mixing skills, scored a
memorable set at infamous outdoor party place, Bondi Beach.
On his return to the UK Matt started at Nottingham Trent
University where in his first year he was given a show on
the Nottingham radio station Fly FM. Since the shows
inception three years ago, 'Junk Funk' has gone on to win
the station's best newcomer award and has seen Matt promoted
to head of night-time DJs. 2002 saw the show gain increased
support from local independent record shop Funky Monkey, and
also from underground club The Bomb who have been
instrumental in organising exclusive guest slots from top
name DJs such as Craig Richards, Jay Tripwire and Dave
Congreve. In addition to his show on Fly FM, Matt has also
recently been asked to play once a month for American
internet radio website Proton radio.
Mirroring this success on the airwaves Matt has been making
his own moves within the Nottingham clubscene. Whether
playing at his long-term, ongoing residency at The Bomb, as
well as his recently gained position as Bi-Weekly resident
of Stealth, Matt works continually at establishing his own
sound. Sonically ambitious, Matt's voice is one that
amalgamates elements of the sounds he loves. Fusing the
jacking, zig-zag soul of Chicagoans like Derrick Carter and
Sneak with Tyrant's driving, low-slung breaks and bleeps,
MattÆs performances in 2002/03 have ensured that his will be
one of the emergent names to watch in the near future. From
the all-night New Years Eve Frontroom Bomb set with local
production duo Sound Alliance, to playing for four hours
alongside Craig Richards in the main room at Tyrant in
February 2003, June 2003 and Novemeber 2003, his success is
highly encouraging. The May bank holiday of 2003 also saw
him playing alongside his DJ hero Derrick Carter for the
Drop the Bomb boat party. It's this type of progression
forward that has the same hallmarks as one of the delicately
nuanced, astutely sequenced set lists he is responsible for.
And while the future holds more djing for Matt, he also
wants to be involved in the other aspects of dance music and
has recently begun to delve in production work under the
moniker Out-ed. The first track finished, Fly Me, was
recently signed to Northern Lights for there Spring Sampler,
and there is more in the pipeline. Given his recent track
record of success you wouldn't bet against his enthusiasm
and ambition to convert this drive into something positive.
And, you can be sure he'll be enjoying every minute of the
journey.
