▓████▓▌ The analogy isnÆt exact, but thereÆs something ▓▌
▓████▓▌ quite appropriate in the fact that Veda Hille has ▓▌
▓████▓▌ called her new CD The Return of the Killdeer. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Killdeer, of course, are a species of upland ▓▌
▓████▓▌ plover, known for their piping call and for their ▓▌
▓████▓▌ habit of feigning injury to confuse predators. If a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ fox or coyote or raccoon gets within range of a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ killdeerÆs nest, the bird will limp off in the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ opposite direction, pretending it has a broken ▓▌
▓████▓▌ wing. Once the interloper has been lured to a safe ▓▌
▓████▓▌ distance, the bird springs nimbly into the air and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ away from the carnivoreÆs slavering jaws. Killdeer ▓▌
▓████▓▌ have been doing this for tens of thousands of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ years, yet the trick still works every time. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Now, HilleÆs not a bird with a broken wing, real or ▓▌
▓████▓▌ imaginary. SheÆs one of the hardest-working ▓▌
▓████▓▌ musicians in Vancouver. But some years ago she did ▓▌
▓████▓▌ sustain an injury that kept her from flying the way ▓▌
▓████▓▌ she wanted to, and in many ways Killdeer is her ▓▌
▓████▓▌ return to the nest. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ The damage was done at the turn of the last ▓▌
▓████▓▌ century, when Hille was winning rave reviews for ▓▌
▓████▓▌ You Do Not Live in This World Alone and had just ▓▌
▓████▓▌ signed a deal to release it on the much-touted ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Bottom Line label, a new offshoot of the famous New ▓▌
▓████▓▌ York City nightclub. Alas, the label proved ▓▌
▓████▓▌ undercapitalized and it collapsed within months, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ leaving Hille with some legal entanglements, a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ sizable debt, and no U.S. release to help offset ▓▌
▓████▓▌ her costs. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ôI feel like IÆm just coming out of a slower time,ö ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the singer-pianist explains. ôIÆve been writing, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ but I was in retreat from the world a lot. I didnÆt ▓▌
▓████▓▌ realize it until much later, but I was quite ▓▌
▓████▓▌ personally hurt when the label fell apart and the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ record didnÆt come out in the States. I try to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ think of it as just business stuff, but in fact it ▓▌
▓████▓▌ hurt my feelings quite a bit, so I retreated into ▓▌
▓████▓▌ more of an art-house world and worked on these ▓▌
▓████▓▌ funny projects and stayed home a lot more, and this ▓▌
▓████▓▌ was what came out of it.ö ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ This being Return of the Killdeer, HilleÆs first ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ôrealö studio album since You Do Not Live In This ▓▌
▓████▓▌ World Alone. ItÆs not like sheÆs not been busy: in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the interim, she visited the Yukon and released ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Field Studies, a low-key but beautiful album about ▓▌
▓████▓▌ her experiences there; wrote song cycles ▓▌
▓████▓▌ celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Vancouver ▓▌
▓████▓▌ East Cultural Centre and the 25th anniversary of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the Vancouver Folk Music Festival; collaborated on ▓▌
▓████▓▌ a discÆs worth of abstract soundscapes, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Escapesongs, with Montreal audio artist Christof ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Migone; recorded a live CD, Auditorium, with horn ▓▌
▓████▓▌ arrangements by Hard Rubber Orchestra mastermind ▓▌
▓████▓▌ John Korsrud; and was music director for a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Whitehorse-produced revival of the musical Hair. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ThatÆs a significant list for someone supposedly in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ retreat from the world. Still, Hille contends that ▓▌
▓████▓▌ itÆs only now that she has fully regained her ▓▌
▓████▓▌ appetite for making sound. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ôIÆve had a return to optimism and excitement and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ energy,ö she says, ôwhich I think is the result of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ taking it a little slower for a while. IÆm in love ▓▌
▓████▓▌ with music again, and IÆm happy with my family, and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the world seems a little more open than it did four ▓▌
▓████▓▌ years ago.ö ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Anyone looking for audible proof of this needs only ▓▌
▓████▓▌ turn to the new discÆs fourth and fifth tracks, ôMy ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Disappointmentö and ôWhere Am I From?ö. In this ▓▌
▓████▓▌ context, the first is self-explanatory, right down ▓▌
▓████▓▌ to the quote from Frank SinatraÆs ôMy Wayö at the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ end; the second is a little hymn of contentment ▓▌
▓████▓▌ that even embraces the Vancouver rain. But HilleÆs ▓▌
▓████▓▌ also got some external reasons to be happy: Return ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of the Killdeer is slated to be her first U.K. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ release, courtesy of former XTC frontman Andy ▓▌
▓████▓▌ PartridgeÆs new Ape House imprint. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ôItÆs a very small label, and theyÆre fairly ▓▌
▓████▓▌ untried, but IÆm very happy with the association,ö ▓▌
▓████▓▌ she says. ôAnd I love XTC. But more importantly, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Andy and his business manager Steve and my manager ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Gary [Cristall] and me have been talking, and itÆs ▓▌
▓████▓▌ been very easy. TheyÆre nice people, and thereÆs ▓▌
▓████▓▌ nothing like working with nice people. ItÆs the ▓▌
