For two decades, John Santos and the Machete
Ensemble have cooked up sweltering Latin jazz. It
has garnered them a Grammy nomination and
international acclaim. "20th Anniversary" is a two
-CD set that profiles their exceptional talent then
and now. Comprisig unreleased recordings from 1989-
1996, and new sessions, the set abounds with
highlights, including John Coltrane's "Giant
Steps," with a brilliant timbale solo by Orestes
Vilato. Disc two spotlights special guests like
singer/trumpeter Jerry Medina from Puerto Rico and
Bay Area vocalist Destani Wolf, who does a soulful
"You Don't Know What Love Is." Always swinging,
always inventing, this set is a credit to Santos
and his pals, who celebrate 20 years together
