▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀ Notes And Comments About The Release ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
Not exactly a greatest-hits set, how could it be without such
masterpieces as "Madness," "Money Worries," and "Africa We Want to
Go"? In fact, the post-reggae period is particularly poorly served,
with only "Road to Zion" representing the duo's roots and culture
canon. In fairness though, the Maytones's output had considerably
diminished by the roots era, as their manager/producer Alvin Ranglin
turned his attention to other artists (notably Gregory Isaacs). But
previous to that, the pair had unleashed a deluge of singles, kicking
off with their exuberant 1968 debut "Billy Goat." The liner notes
provide a career overview, and the album is sequenced in something
approaching rough chronological order (hardcore fans should be wary
of the dates within the sleeve notes and should not put faith in the
actual track order). If Brown Girl in the Ring gives short shrift to
the roots age, it more than makes up for by the prolific number of
earlier hits included. At 28 tracks, this is one of the most generous
single-disc compilations around, and best yet it's dregs-free,
virtually every number within was a single, and almost all a hit.
This includes such fabulous covers as their breakout hit "Loving
Reggae," the inspired take on "Cecilia," the country & western funk
of "Groove Me," the superb "Black and White," the exquisite "Born to
Be Loved," the spectacular "If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don't Want to
Be Right)," and the title track, all masterpieces. Their own
compositions were equally strong. Ranging across cultural themes --
"Cleanliness," "Wha Nu Dead," "All Over the World People Are
Changing," "Bongo Man Rise"; love songs, notably "Bowee Wowee" and
"As Long as You Love Me"; the soulful "Gold on Your Dress,"
"Sentimental Reason," and many more; and even a sarcastic swipe at
the DJs, the inspired "Let the Version Play." One could easily
justify listing every song on the set and trying to choose between
them is a pointless exercise. There's more Maytones one will still
need, but this is one album no fan can be without.
