Clor defy easy categorisation. Quirky most definitely, perhaps even a tad
bonkers. Theirs is a journey through jerky alternative pop, a Devo for the 21st
Century. In fact, imagine Devo working with the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band - you
really do have to check this Sixties madcap English ensemble out to understand
this latest in a series of cultural references but it'll be worth the effort -
and you have an insight into what makes Clor tick.
There are scything guitars, whirling keyboards and "lop-sided catchiness"
running throughout the record, as evidenced on the new single, Outlines, and the
metronomic Dangerzone. Then there's the undoubted hookiness of Love + Pain,
which almost has an air of the Boomtown Rats about it. It's tuneful stuff
alright, but no way is it a particularly easy ride.
A song like Hearts On Fire jars the senses at the same time as it drags you into
its web of hooks and downright "under your skin-ness", as to be honest does most
of the material on this great, great record.
