░  For a singer-songwriter who music journalists will dare to call            ░
░  "emerging", 19-year-old Simon Bruce has the poise and musical smarts of    ░
░  someone twice his age. This dark-haired young man is a rare find; he       ░
░  knows his history - respects it - and, as evidenced by his debut album     ░
░  Restless Thoughts, he's not afraid to use it.                              ░

░  While his high school peers were out causing trouble and listening to      ░
░  Limp Bizkit, Simon Bruce was contemplating the canon. And by canon we      ░
░  mean the big guns: Tom Petty, Neil Young and, of course, Bob Dylan.        ░
░  That's remarkable enough for a teenager growing up in inner Sydney. But    ░
░  then this is one remarkable story.                                         ░

░  It begins at age eight when Simon, living in Melbourne, found an affinity  ░
░  with Italian opera singer Mario Lanza - an influence from his parents -    ░
░  and then the youngster discovered another iconic 20th Century favourite.   ░
░  "I really dug Mario Lanza and then I got into Elvis. I was pretty young,   ░
░  probably eight or so .. [I thought] Elvis really rocked and I really dug   ░
░  him. Later, more recently, I found out that Elvis had listened to Mario    ░
░  Lanza, was a fan studying his work. I found that interesting."             ░

░  It's an adorable image, the tiny Simon Bruce in his primary school         ░
░  playground, getting down to "Blue Suede Shoes". Frame the image slightly   ░
░  more seriously, though, and this is where the musical seed was planted.    ░
░  In fact, this is when Simon first started playing guitar. "I got it from   ░
░  Santa," he laughs. "I always wanted to play the guitar."                   ░
