▓████▓▌ Colin Stetson and the Transmission Trio re-ignite ▓▌
▓████▓▌ for a night of scorching music ▓▌
▓████▓▌ This is not a review as much as it is a wake-up ▓▌
▓████▓▌ call. In the 8 Days a Week section of the February ▓▌
▓████▓▌ 18 edition of The San Francisco Bay Guardian a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ writer lamented the lack of 'jazz musicians who ▓▌
▓████▓▌ play a high-voltage improv, not the sterile stuff ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Grandma likes.' I won't name names but the writer ▓▌
▓████▓▌ goes on to cite an open mic hosted by a guitar, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ organ, drum trio as the most 'explosive' he's been ▓▌
▓████▓▌ able to find in these parts. The musicians he named ▓▌
▓████▓▌ are good players; I saw one of them perform at ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Yoshi's not too long ago. The fact remains, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ however, that there is an entire culture of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ innovative, off the wall improvisers in the Bay ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Area who go unnoticed and really are making new ▓▌
▓████▓▌ sounds. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ One February 18 at the Beat Lounge in North Beach ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the Transmission Trio reconvened for a night of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ scorching music. Colin Stetson, in from New York ▓▌
▓████▓▌ for a madcap week of gigging, joined Eric Perney ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and Tim Strand and the three played as Transmission ▓▌
▓████▓▌ for the first time in months. It's too bad the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Guardian's stringer couldn't be in attendance ▓▌
▓████▓▌ because he could have heard a band he obviously ▓▌
▓████▓▌ missed during their nearly two year weekly tenure ▓▌
▓████▓▌ at Storyville, and he could have gotten some killer ▓▌
▓████▓▌ leads on other bands in the area who play inspiring ▓▌
▓████▓▌ music that is far from conventional. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Atop the elegantly raucous rhythm section of Perney ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and Strand, Stetson rode roughshod with his reeds. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ The range of moods and modes that these three are ▓▌
▓████▓▌ able to travel through has never ceased to amaze ▓▌
▓████▓▌ me. The night's moment that really exemplified this ▓▌
▓████▓▌ band's acumen was when from the beak-neck screams ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and bouncy bass of Fez the band capered directly ▓▌
▓████▓▌ into an Eastern European folk song in which Stetson ▓▌
▓████▓▌ pressed notes through his clarinet as if it were an ▓▌
▓████▓▌ accordion. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ As this was also a bit of a homecoming for Stetson ▓▌
▓████▓▌ plenty of his friends showed up and played. Aaron ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Novick with his bass clarinet and Adam Theis with ▓▌
▓████▓▌ his trombone spent the most time on stage with the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ trio. Both of these guys play in their own bands, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Gubbish and Realistic respectively. And of course ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Perney and Strand have several other projects ▓▌
▓████▓▌ around the Bay too. The point is this: Don't assume ▓▌
▓████▓▌ that the Bay Area's only brands of cutting-edge new ▓▌
▓████▓▌ music are DJ and indie-pop-rock related. If you are ▓▌
▓████▓▌ looking for exciting players that challenge the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ jazz genre check out all these guys, and check out ▓▌
▓████▓▌ who they play with and I assure you, you won't be ▓▌
▓████▓▌ disappointed. ▓▌
