│║ An early love can enrich your whole life. ║ │
│║ Nevertheless, sometimes it just feels good to ║ │
│║ make a new experience. This does not necessarily ║ │
│║ mean to be no longer true to yourself. Perhaps ║ │
│║ the new love simply matches perfectly your own ║ │
│║ wishes, just like a wonderful, intelligent and ║ │
│║ humorous woman with long, blond hair, a lovely ║ │
│║ face and an absolutely flawless body. (Okay, ║ │
│║ maybe she says that her feet are too big or ║ │
│║ something like that, but this is either a lie or ║ │
│║ completely irrelevant.) Not to mention her ║ │
│║ erotic charm! ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Of course, Venom is my early love in terms of ║ │
│║ black metal and "At War with Satan" will remain ║ │
│║ untouched for all eternity. Yet my new love - to ║ │
│║ perpetuate my crude analogy - is Venom Inc., ║ │
│║ because "AvΘ" fits my musical taste and its ║ │
│║ weakness for simple structures very well. Okay, ║ │
│║ maybe I should not use the term "love" when it ║ │
│║ comes to the music of three old geezers who are ║ │
│║ in total 180 year old. Up to now, I was not ║ │
│║ aware of having a necrophile tendency. Thus, ║ │
│║ let's express it differently: Venom Inc. play ║ │
│║ old school black metal and I really mean old. ║ │
│║ "AvΘ" has nothing in common with the icy ║ │
│║ blizzards that blew across the snow-covered ║ │
│║ fields of Norway back in 1992, but it holds many ║ │
│║ traditional stylistic devices. The album ║ │
│║ therefore builds a bridge to the beginning of ║ │
│║ the genre and this does not come as a surprise ║ │
│║ in view of the involvement of the old warhorses ║ │
│║ Mantas, Abaddon and Dolan. The most important ║ │
│║ members of the line-ups of "Prime Evil", ║ │
│║ "Temples of Ice" and "The Waste Lands" strike ║ │
│║ again and remain true to themselves. If you like ║ │
│║ these albums, you are part of the target group ║ │
│║ of "AvΘ". ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The advance tracks, namely "Dein Fleisch" and ║ │
│║ the quasi-title track, show a three-piece that ║ │
│║ loves to celebrate stomping rhythms, effective ║ │
│║ riffs and catchy elements. Regardless of its ║ │
│║ pretty moronic intro, an unholy aura surrounds ║ │
│║ "AvΘ Satanas". The stoical hammering of Abaddon ║ │
│║ rolls out the carpet for the slightly demonic ║ │
│║ number and it goes without saying that the demon ║ │
│║ itself contributes a spoken words section. ║ │
│║ Needless to say that his voice sounds very deep ║ │
│║ and imperious simultaneously. The old gimmicks ║ │
│║ of "At War with Satan" still work excellently... ║ │
│║ "Dein Fleisch" spreads some unholy vibes as ║ │
│║ well, but it rather tends to dark desires and ║ │
│║ lustful pain. Dolan plays the voluptuous lover ║ │
│║ and - I am surprised - he is convincing in this ║ │
│║ role. By the way, I have read that the song has ║ │
│║ an industrial touch, but I do not agree. It's ║ │
│║ just another mid-paced black metal jewel, not ║ │
│║ overly harsh, but catchy and creepy. Thus, we ║ │
│║ have enjoyed two killer tracks, but, as always, ║ │
│║ the question is whether they really represent ║ │
│║ the standard of "AvΘ"? ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Honestly speaking, both advance tracks belong to ║ │
│║ the best pieces. Nevertheless, the album has ║ │
│║ almost more highlights than Tony and Mantas have ║ │
│║ tattoos on their arms. Well, I do not like kind ║ │
│║ of "art" at all. It's absolutely okay if a ║ │
│║ loving mother has a tattoo with the name and the ║ │
│║ birthday of her children, but any other tattoo ║ │
│║ is not my cup of tea. By contrast, I like the ║ │
│║ highlights of "AvΘ" very much. For example, ║ │
│║ "Time to Die" and The Evil Dead" blast their way ║ │
│║ through the fiery pits of hell with challenging ║ │
│║ guitars, double bass bombardments and straight ║ │
│║ up-tempo approaches. The mid-paced "Preacher ║ │
│║ Man" has a very dark touch and, maybe just ║ │
│║ because of its title, it reminds me of ║ │
│║ "Blackened are the Priests", a showpiece from ║ │
│║ "Prime Evil". Only the solo part does not hit ║ │
│║ the bull's eye. But this is no surprise, the ║ │
│║ boiling "Metal We Bleed" shows the same symptom. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ So what? The greatest plus of this "debut" is ║ │
│║ the simple yet extremely strong and bone-dry ║ │
│║ riffing of Mantas. This element even helps the ║ │
│║ weaker songs, for example the stale "Blood ║ │
│║ Stained", to keep the head (more or less) above ║ │
│║ water. Anyway, the electrifying closer "Black n' ║ │
│║ Roll" and its neighbour "I Kneel to No God" ║ │
│║ bundle the strengths of the very experienced ║ │
│║ band for the last time: the aforementioned ║ │
│║ riffing, a pretty malignant aura, a strict, ║ │
│║ robust and simple song pattern, a knack for ║ │
│║ catchy lines and the very suitable voice of the ║ │
│║ Demolition Man. Generally speaking, "AvΘ" does ║ │
│║ not have a funny side and, in accordance with ║ │
│║ the albums that the guys published under the ║ │
│║ banner of Venom, it does not offer radical ║ │
│║ sounds. It's just powerful, blackened metal with ║ │
│║ a proper dose of thrash and tradition. And, ║ │
│║ needless to say, Nuclear Blast gave enough money ║ │
│║ for a vigorous and well-balanced production. The ║ │
│║ album sounds neither soulless nor overly trendy. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Our dotty friend called Demolition Man says in a ║ │
│║ YouTube video that the here presented riffs are ║ │
│║ the typical Mantas riffs which reflect the ║ │
│║ guitarist's personality while giving the entire ║ │
│║ music of Venom Inc. its identity. Apart from the ║ │
│║ fact that these promotional videos should not be ║ │
│║ taken too seriously, there is a grain of truth ║ │
│║ in the words of the vocalist (who wears, ║ │
│║ confusingly enough, a shirt with the words "I ║ │
│║ love Jesus" - this and the warm cap on his bald ║ │
│║ head make him look like a jester). The guitar ║ │
│║ work is rather primitive than high ║ │
│║ sophisticated, but it exudes this original aroma ║ │
│║ that cannot be created by other musicians. "AvΘ ║ │
│║ Satanas", for instance, appears as a distant ║ │
│║ relative of "In League with Satan" and this song ║ │
│║ saw the light of day in October 1980. Given this ║ │
│║ situation, the verdict is clear. In terms of ║ │
│║ music, my childhood sweetheart Venom and my ║ │
│║ recent heroes Venom Inc., who seem to have a ║ │
│║ penchant for integrating sheep on their ║ │
│║ artworks, just think of M-pire of Evil's "Hell ║ │
│║ to the Holy", are on an equal footing. But with ║ │
│║ regard to women, there can be no doubt that the ║ │
│║ elegant beauty I love today has unleashed an ║ │
│║ emotional tsunami that I have not felt before. ║ │
