fans of new york house music will be familiar with rob rives' work
as an engineer on numerous records by danny tenaglia and
franτois k. and as a co-producer on remixes for acts including
kraftwerk, underworld, can, and others. rob's work on his own
tends toward the darker, more atmospheric realms of house and
electronic music, incorporating his love of purely synthetic
textures with the repetition and minimalism of modern disco.

"downtime" the first lp for the then fledgling wave music label
was an alternately beautiful and challenging debut where
aggressive rhythm elements were paired with spaced-out echoing
electronics to forge a soundtrack for its themes of irony and
loneliness. 12" mixes of "ultrasong" and "excursions" found favor
with djs exploring the darker shades of house and the emerging
     tech-house scene.

with the long delayed new album "short term memories" finally
released on wave music in the spring of 2001, floppy sounds is
reduced to rob operating alone and with various guests and the
result is a more streamlined, user-friendly approach that still
continues the original themes of alienation and decay but refines
the sound using the abstract geometry of deep, hard house grooves.

12" mixes of singles "entertainment" (featuring new york spoken
word star sarah jones) and "team realness" previewed this new
     approach, now reaching its apex with the new single "late night";
where a thumping electro-groove delivers a syncopated paean to
disconnection. the album collects these songs and seven other
tracks into a cinematic experience designed to transport the
listener into an otherworldly realm implied by technology,
hallucinogens, an ersatz media environment, and the science
fiction now world of phillip k. dick.

the resulting lp is an adventurous mix of elements ranging from
the cool, clipped grooves of "doing shows" and "nde" to the
stockhausen vs. on-u sound assault of "remote" and "complex" to
the frozen ambience of "clear"; with nods to a number of
influences including maurizio, public image ltd., carl craig, and
brian eno all discernable in the mix. listeners willing to take
the plunge will be richly rewarded for their efforts by these
dark, pulsing pieces and their seamless integration into an
extended tapestry that engages from the beginning to the end, 74
tripped out minutes later. at least we hope so, anyway.

at the moment rob is still moving forward into uncharted sonic
territories both as a producer and engineer. his other projects on
wave music include some deep minimal electronic tracks for our
sister label clicktracks under the name 'phantom power', a
follow-up to 2000's popular fluid x release, as well as additional
remixes for timewriter's papillon. he also has forthcoming tracks
on the labels yoshitoshi and junior boy's own.
