with a mother who taught dance and a studio engineer for a father,
jim robins (aka raw deal) had always lived in a house filled with
music. from a young age he learnt to play piano then as a teenager
a passion for druming took over before settling on the bass
guitar. at 15 he was already making a name for himself as a
hip-hop dj,but with an open attitude to music that has become
characteristic found his way to the roots of hip-hop,the beats and
breaks of funk and jazz. while other teenagers were playing
nintendo, jim was all ready out working with dj and vinyl collector
keb darge at the now defunct brain club on wardour street.
initially the two played a mixture of house, hip hop and rare
groove, but they soon began to realise that it was a particular
kind of sound that was filling the floor. gradually they unearthed
this precious seam in funk, discovering that it was popular enough
to deserve its own night, deep funk, which found a home at madame
jo joÆs in soho. itÆs still running, celebrating its tenth
anniversary this year as the home of funk in london, legendary for
its atmosphere as much as the sound it defines. for raw deal each
genre is a door to another. groove sanctuary, his own night at
madame jo joÆs, is a weekly statement of this musical outlook. a
four or five hour set might gather deep soulful house, brokenbeats,
nu-jazz,and boogie classics into one fluid mix,but even loyal
regulars are often surprised by what gems come out of the bag. he
regularly shares the decks at groove sanctuary with like minded
guest djÆs including, jazzanova, peter kruder, phil asher and
patrick forge who have all borne witness to the enthusiasm of the
dancers, and dancing is what this night is about. the groove
sanctuary mix album (released in 2002) is a snapshot of the clubÆs
atmosphere and sound at a particular time,a point in its
progression captured on cd. since the early days of his career jim
has spent much time in the recording studio as producer, remixer
and artist. his first single, Æheadless horsemanÆ on botchit &
scarper, his take on the trip-hop sound current at that time, was
championed by many djs including, james lavelle and gilles
peterson. its success along with subsequent releases on b&s gave
him the opportunity to co-produce an album for urban species
(talkinÆ loud). he then went on to create two eps for the talkinÆ
loud label, as well as an album æthis is rawÆ which was
exclusively released in japan. as an artist he has a new album out
on straight ahead records this summer with two singles released so
far æeye flyÆ and æblues for brother george jacksonÆ that give a
tantalising glimpse of what to expect-blending old school
house, jazz and soulful vocals with an unmistakable funky
undercurrent. the respect accorded to groove sanctuary, deep funk
and the popularity of his other resident dj spot on monday nights
at bar rumba- this (thatÆs how it is) where he plays along side
gilles peterson and his prolific remix work for artists including
courtney pine, nicola conte and yukihiro fukutomi to name but a
few have earned raw deal far reaching respect and recognition.
along with his three london club residencies and recording studio
commitments he now fulfils a packed dj schedule around the world
including regular spots in barcelona, madrid, belgium, switzerland
and japan.
