█ It seems that since he scored THE SIXTH SENSE, █
█ James Newton Howard has become quite the popular █
█ film composer among both fans and filmmakers. The █
█ year 2000, in particular, has been a very good █
█ year for him. Both DINOSAUR and UNBREAKABLE, █
█ although quite different from each other, are █
█ modern masterpieces in the realm of film scoring. █
█ It's a shame that his third entry for this year █
█ doesn't quite measure up -- It comes close though. █
█ █
█ VERTICAL LIMIT is a mountain climbing █
█ action/thriller directed by Martin Campbell █
█ (GOLDENEYE, THE MASK OF ZORRO) and stars Chris █
█ O'Donnell and Robin Tunney. Instead of focusing █
█ more on the action or conflicts in the film, █
█ Howard's score aurally captures the beauty that █
█ can be found from overlooking the tops of the █
█ majestic K2 mountain range. The action music for █
█ VERTICAL LIMIT is not nearly as exciting and █
█ thrilling as Howard has been able to achieve in █
█ the past for WATERWORLD, THE FUGITIVE, and █
█ OUTBREAK. In that respect, VERTICAL LIMIT is a bit █
█ of a disappointment, but in terms of majestic and █
█ grand film music, Howard delivers. The strings are █
█ warm and lush and the French horns play nice, long █
█ melodies. Track 5, "You Wanna Do This?" is █
█ particularly effective. It's definitely the █
█ highlight track of the score and alone is almost █
█ worth your hard earned $14.99. █
█ █
█ There's also plenty of suspense in the score. █
█ Track 11, "Nitro" is quite tense with driving █
█ percussion and chances for the brass section to █
█ shine with foreboding growls. Suspense music █
█ doesn't always work well apart from the film, █
█ though, and such is the case with VERTICAL LIMIT. █
█ The slow pacing of the music makes for good █
█ background music, but for little else. The all-out █
█ action cues are few and far between and when they █
█ do occur like in "Avalanche," they are over before █
█ they even begin. █
█ █
█ Still, Howard has plenty of tricks up his sleeve █
█ to keep this score from tumbling down into the █
█ realm of mediocrity and conventionality. Those of █
█ you who enjoy Howard's modally mixed harmonic █
█ progressions and tricks will be pleased with some █
█ of the stunts he pulls. The orchestration is great █
█ as well. The blending of the woodwinds with horn █
█ and strings is done tastefully in tracks like █
█ "Anne and Peter" where there's slight rumblings █
█ from the marimba in the background. █
█ █
█ Howard's VERTICAL LIMIT theme is pretty good too. █
█ Having only one theme to drive the score has been █
█ quite the popular trend over the past few years. █
█ The theme pops up quite often and Howard gets in a █
█ few great variations before the 45 minute Varese █
█ Sarabande album ends. Still, it would've been more █
█ interesting if a B theme would've appeared more █
█ often. I wish the melodic material found in the █
█ fanfarish sections of "You Wanna Do This?" █
█ could've been used as secondary thematic material. █
█ █
█ It also should be noted that VERTICAL LIMIT ends █
█ quite nicely: very serene and peaceful like █
█ Howard's ending to WATERWORLD. The final chord █
█ contains a sustain from the higher-registered █
█ instruments as the lower instruments quickly █
█ crescendo in (slightly reminiscent of Igor █
█ Stravinsky's ending to "The Firebird"). It's an █
█ intriguing and effective way to end the score. All █
█ in all, VERTICAL LIMIT is a fine James Newton █
█ Howard film score. It is not his best work, █
█ though, especially taking into account how █
█ wonderful DINOSAUR and UNBREAKABLE are. VERTICAL █
█ LIMIT really is only a little slip in Howard's █
█ climb to the top of film music's ranks. At the █
█ rate Howard's been climbing these past two years, █
█ he should be king of the mountain in no time. █
