If one word were to describe Speeka, it would have to
be: intangible. Simply because that's exactly what their music is.
You can't say it's funk, or hip hop. You can't pin it down as
garage, and even tagging it with the broadest term such as 'dance'
doesn't come close to capturing what it is.
Imagine a festival. Your favourite festival. Imagine having had a
full day of trekking round sodden fields, enjoying but not really
paying too much attention to a whole host of bands. You're either
pissed, on a massive come down, or just plain knackered. Enter a
smoke filled tent littered with bodies in pretty much the same
state as you, and then imagine that Speeka take the stage.
What you'll find, is that your mood is suddenly that little bit
lighter. You'll find that your thoughts drift back and forth
between reality, and a calmer, more tranquil place, where
everything just...flows.
Throughout the 12 tracks on the album, Speeka have managed to
stitch together a seamless cloak of emotional balance. A comfort
blanket if you will, to snuggle into when the world just gets too
much.
There are fleeting moments when you could easily be listening to
the lighter side of Portishead. But then the mood changes again,
the melodies break up into something new, and the vocals shift
between silk and sand.
