│║ Ten years is a long time between albums. But ║ │
│║ with the new Cellador incoming next month, we'll ║ │
│║ see how well a lengthy gap suits the veterans. ║ │
│║ In the meantime, Italy's Ancestral return to the ║ │
│║ fold with Master of Fate, 50 minutes of ║ │
│║ blistering power metal that makes it seem as if ║ │
│║ they never left us at all. Try and ignore how ║ │
│║ much the awesome album art reminds you of Luca ║ │
│║ Turilli; this is devoid of any of the excessive ║ │
│║ pomp normally featured in Italian power metal. ║ │
│║ No bells and whistles here, just a heavy ║ │
│║ emphasis on the 'metal'. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ This is made clear from the very first split- ║ │
│║ second. Rapid double-bass attacks and E-strings ║ │
│║ chugging explode from your speakers as the ║ │
│║ frenzied assault of "Back To Life" kicks you in ║ │
│║ the face and says 'we've returned, ║ │
│║ motherfuckers!' And the rest of the album pretty ║ │
│║ much follows suit. This is what would've ║ │
│║ happened if Blind Guardian had carried on the ║ │
│║ style of Battalions of Fear for the next 30 ║ │
│║ years, but finely tuned and shaped their sound ║ │
│║ to be razor sharp without the need for over- ║ │
│║ polished production. It also bears resemblance ║ │
│║ to early Helloween - which is appropriate, as ║ │
│║ the band have attached an excellent cover of the ║ │
│║ classic "Savage" to the end of this album. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Every band member is firing on all cylinders. ║ │
│║ Drummer Massimiliano Mendolia (what a name!) is ║ │
│║ a force to be reckoned with; bursting with ║ │
│║ ferocious energy, and aided by a superb ║ │
│║ production - making the snare and bass ║ │
│║ especially powerful. Check out his blasts two ║ │
│║ and a half minutes into the instrumental "Refuge ║ │
│║ of Souls". Speaking of that track, bassist ║ │
│║ Domiziano Mendolia pulls off some insane tap ║ │
│║ work at the 3:30 mark! Jo Lombardo's soaring ║ │
│║ vocal delivery may waver a little in mid-range, ║ │
│║ but he absolutely oozes the European power ║ │
│║ style. And let's not even get started on the ║ │
│║ guitars. The riffs are plentiful, and the solos ║ │
│║ are blazingly shred-worthy. Master Of Fate is an ║ │
│║ air-guitarists paradise. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The songwriting is top notch. No track is ║ │
│║ glossed over without thought, and they all ║ │
│║ contain that progressive tinge that keeps you ║ │
│║ coming back for more. On more than one occasion, ║ │
│║ the Italians may get slightly self-indulgent, ║ │
│║ and a guitar solo could extend for longer than ║ │
│║ it needs to. However, this only warrants a ║ │
│║ hearty chuckle from me. Bless 'em, they're ║ │
│║ having fun! "No More Regrets" is the game- ║ │
│║ changer on the album, slowing the pace down ║ │
│║ exactly when necessary: right after the ║ │
│║ relentless "Lust For Supremacy" (featuring ║ │
│║ stunning guest vocals from the mighty Fabio ║ │
│║ Lione! He gets everywhere... ). The menacing ║ │
│║ march of "On The Route Of Death" is also a ║ │
│║ highlight - exhibiting some topical lyrics which ║ │
│║ few modern bands have dared to approach. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ From the savage riffs of "Seven Months Of ║ │
│║ Siege", to the crashing finale of "From Beyond", ║ │
│║ Master of Fate is an excellent return to form ║ │
│║ from a band who never deserved to disappear. I'd ║ │
│║ forgive you for thinking power metal may have ║ │
│║ become saturated in recent years, and perhaps a ║ │
│║ tad too flowery and pompous. But Ancestral have ║ │
│║ come to drag the year 1985, kicking and ║ │
│║ screaming, into the 21st century - pummelling ║ │
│║ everything in their way en route. ║ │
