From the hotbed of Israeli talent, duo, Eden Cohen and Rami Shalom,
are making giant strides with their MINTZ production name. Now
returning to Particles they showcase their conceptual "In a Lonely
Place" EP that reflects their "fears, thoughts, love, nature and
animals".
Friends from northern Israel who began their journey into the world of
music production in early 2014, Cohen and Shalom laboured for many
hours in the studio to produce a fresh and vibrant sound that
comprises a raft of genres and styles. A trio of MINTZ remixes have
found their way onto Particles as the duo now return with a thematic
offering that sees a single thread running through both pieces. The
title track is a delightfully melodic journey that revels in
melancholy arpeggio lines and counterpoint melody. Filters and delays
play their part in adding texture and depth as a metronomic rhythmic
bed evolves with shuffling hi-hat urgency and strong kick in a work of
skill and poise. Partner track "Zepra" continues the melodic themes
laid down by its predecessor, influenced by African equids, as rolling
arpeggio sequences pan across the left-right spectrum. The periodic
inclusion of an additional freeform melody adds further depth as does
a richly harmonic pad and hypnotic reversed ostinato. Rhythmic
interest comes from a deep, muted kick, offbeat open hat and clap in a
work of style and beauty.
The first remix comes courtesy of German techno legend, Oliver Lieb.
An artist with a celebrated career and catalogue to match, Lieb's
reputation carries all before him as his work under a variety of
production soubriquets has brought him continued success. Remixes of
Faithless, Moby and The Human League have brought mainstream success
while work signed to Hooj Choons, Yoshitoshi and Bedrock have provided
a vehicle for the German's innumerable talents. A regular on Proton
Music with his "Dark Energy" and "VY Canis Majoris" original EPs, a
debut on Particles reveals a typically inspiring remix of "In a Lonely
Place". Working with a strong rhythmic backdrop of rolling 808 toms
and snapping clap, the arpeggio that underpinned MINTZ's original
flows across the left-right spectrum in easy manner. Pausing at a
stripped back mid-point, the second half is propelled forward with a
huge stepped analogue lead, full of noise and menace. The perfect foil
to MINTZ's sound, Oliver Lieb has created a masterstroke of
inventiveness.
Hazem Beltagui is another artist with a storied background. A renowned
DJ across his home country of Egypt and beyond saw him close to
breaking the 2014, Top 100 in the annual DJ Mag awards. Regularly
supported by the likes of Armin van Buuren, Jaytech and Charlie May,
since a 2010 debut, ARVA, Armada and Black Hole have found a home for
his unique 'melotrance' sound as well as his own Red Soho Recordings.
Using his Ampish pseudonym to explore a deeper side to his music,
November 2016 saw the "Dreams About Her/Nevada" EP released on Bad
Pony, before "A Day Without You" on Crossings in February 2017. Now
debuting on Particles the Ampish remix of "Zepra" reworks the familiar
arpeggio from MINTZ's work around a new rhythmic shell that bristles
with hypnotic beauty. Building with consummate ease, additional
production in the shape of a new grooved melodic sequence adds texture
and depth alongside the original's shining, freeform lead line. The
resultant production is an intelligent variation on a theme.
A quartet of new tracks including a pair remixes from Oliver Lieb and
Ampish ensure that MINTZ are certainly not "In a Lonely Place".
enjoy!
