Shortie takes a gigantic step toward being noticed on their
sophmore release, Watching You Drown. Their independent debut,
Wipe Your Eyes, was a solid effort, but it was evident
throughout the recording that what truly was holding the band
back was frontman Pogus' reliance on vocal effects and
reluctance to take vocal classes to strengthen his true
potential as a lead singer. Time passed, and with their 720
records album Watching You Drown, one will hear the
unmistakeable difference in Pogus' melodies. Gone is the young
man who needed effects to alter his vocals on every track, and
welcome in a new voice to music. Grant you this album is fairly
average; there is little to no real standout portions to
Watching You Drown. What this album does show is a band that has
enough potential to be performing at major venues across the
country. Watching You Drown is sometimes painfully
over-produced, but it is, for the most part, a very smooth
listen. Inevitably, this will be an underground hit, and one
can't disagree with the reason why. It is a solid album, but in
all honesty, it just isn't amazing by any standard. Kudos to
Shortie for making an album that longtime fans will love, and
one that may even invite new listeners in, but I hope when it
comes time to record their next album they will put 100 percent
into it. The only thing holding Shortie back is, unfortunately,
themselves.
