▓████▓▌ Many of the songs of this first album come from my ▓▌
▓████▓▌ upbringing. I was raised in the Jewish communities ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of both Toronto, Ontario and Rockville, Maryland, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ where I inherited the rich musical traditions of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Eastern Europe in Yiddish and modern Israel in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Hebrew. It is from this music that I draw a deep ▓▌
▓████▓▌ spiritual connection. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ I sang occasionally as a young adult in the cafes ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and bars of Montreal and my native Toronto, but ▓▌
▓████▓▌ these performing experiences were limited to an ▓▌
▓████▓▌ occasional hobby that followed alongside an ▓▌
▓████▓▌ academic career. After completing an undergraduate ▓▌
▓████▓▌ degree at McGill in 1997, I later returned to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Montreal from Toronto in 2000 to do graduate work ▓▌
▓████▓▌ in the field of human rights. There was a special ▓▌
▓████▓▌ energy about this city that called me back. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ I loved the soul of MontrealÆs Mile End, where I ▓▌
▓████▓▌ lived a lax graduate-student life and enjoyed ▓▌
▓████▓▌ French-language classes at the Commission Scolaire ▓▌
▓████▓▌ de Montreal. It was through a French professor ▓▌
▓████▓▌ there that I was connected to my bassist and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ partner composer, Igor Bartula, who was already ▓▌
▓████▓▌ active in the Montreal music scene. Together, we ▓▌
▓████▓▌ collaborated to write world-beat music in English ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and French, and to create new arrangements for the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Jewish music that was in my bones. The project ▓▌
▓████▓▌ developed gradually and eventually, with six other ▓▌
▓████▓▌ very talented Montreal musicians, the debut album ▓▌
▓████▓▌ was recorded at Voxtone Records, under the Disques ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Milagro label. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Ayant grandit dans les communautes juives de ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Toronto et de Rockville au Maryland, la plupart des ▓▌
▓████▓▌ chansons figurant sur mon premier album s'inspirent ▓▌
▓████▓▌ du riche heritage musical et culturel que j'ai ▓▌
▓████▓▌ acquis dans ces milieux. Cet heritage musical, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ provenant autant du yiddish de l'Europe de l'Est ▓▌
▓████▓▌ que de l'hebreu de l'Israel contemporain, evoque en ▓▌
▓████▓▌ moi une profonde attache spirituelle. ▓▌

▓████▓▌ A maintes reprises au cours de mes etudes ▓▌
▓████▓▌ universitaires, j'ai chante dans les bars et cafes ▓▌
▓████▓▌ de Montreal et de ma ville natale de Toronto. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Toutefois, ma formation academique etant une ▓▌
▓████▓▌ priorite a l'epoque, ces prestations se limiterent ▓▌
▓████▓▌ a un simple passe-temps. Apres avoir complete mon ▓▌
▓████▓▌ baccalaureat a l'universite McGill en 1997, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ l'energie particuliere et tres attrayante qui ▓▌
▓████▓▌ regnait dans la metropole francophone me poussa a y ▓▌
▓████▓▌ revenir en 2000 pour entreprendre une maitrise dans ▓▌
▓████▓▌ le secteur des droits humanitaires. ▓▌

▓████▓▌ L'ame du quartier Mile-End de Montreal, ou j'ai ▓▌
▓████▓▌ vecu une paisible vie d'etudiante, me fit chaud au ▓▌
▓████▓▌ coeur et je pris ainsi plaisir a apprendre le ▓▌
▓████▓▌ francais dans les classes de la Commission Scolaire ▓▌
▓████▓▌ de Montreal. Ce fut d'ailleurs par l'entremise de ▓▌
▓████▓▌ mon professeur de francais que je fis la rencontre ▓▌
▓████▓▌ de mon bassiste, compositeur et associe, Igor ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Bartula, qui lui etait deja omnipresent sur la ▓▌
▓████▓▌ scene musicale Quebecoise. Ensemble, nous avons ▓▌
▓████▓▌ collabore a la composition d'une musique de genre ▓▌
▓████▓▌ world-beat en anglais et en francais et a la ▓▌
▓████▓▌ creation de nouveaux arrangements musicaux pour ▓▌
