This hottest of hot current styles does to the samba what dancehall did to
reggae - electronifies it, makes the beats more slammin┤ and showcases
toasters and shouters instead of singers and crooners.
Rio (or "baile", for party) funk has quickly become sweatily embraced by
dancefloor marathoners across Europe and the US after a long period of
gestation in its homeland. Born in the favelas, or slums, of Rio de
Janeiro, this unique brand of funk borrows equally from Miami Bass and
electro hip-hop, and features a wide array of talented vocalists
(including some children) whose rhythms as well as vocals eschew political
content and head straight for the pelvis and the tailbone.
On Rio Funk, the Colors series (an offshoot of Benetton┤s magazine of the
same name) showcases nearly twenty artists from a dozen favelas, with the
accent on Cidade de Deus, the "City of God" well-known from a recent
documentary. Included on the disc is a video track and included in the
package is a beautifully-produced mini-book.
