Release Notes:
Following New YorkÆs Rub æNÆ TugÆs psychotic mash-up that was æCampFIREÆ comes
another crazed, disco-funk, genre-spanning mix from CanadaÆs sex jamminÆ
Chromeo. Featuring classic cuts from Sharon Redd, Jellybean, Herbie Hancock,
Warp 9 and even Robert Palmer and Modern Romance æUn Joli Mix Pour ToiÆ picks
out divine disco-funk oddities alongside some harder to find boogiefied
dancefloor classics to provide us with another crate-digging winner from
BelgiumÆs Eskimo Recordings.
Chromeo are Pee Thug and Dave 1: best friends since their Montreal adolescence,
virtuoso musicians, walking hip hop encyclopedias and the only successful
Arab/Jew partnership since the dawn of human culture. Probably.
Discovered in their hometown by fellow Canadian DJ Tiga, Chromeo fuse their
penchants for two sorely missed musical genres into a wholly new thing. Pee, the
brown-skinned Quebecois street tough, brings analogue synth basslines and drum
machine wizardry α la Cameo and Prince. Dave, the Semitic bookworm contributes
melodic tales of urban romance that would make Phil Collins shed a tear.
Together, their blend of rigorously catchy song structures, memorable hooks and
twirling guitar solos conjures up images of a sophisticated, thugged-out Hall &
Oates (except you donÆt secretly suspect that they make out).
Indeed, ChromeoÆs mission is to make slick-ass loverÆs funk with nary a trace of
irony. ThatÆs right û no fucking irony. These guys are to Rockwell what Andrew
WK is to Meatloaf. Live, Chromeo is more fun than being forced to smoke crack at
gunpoint by Rick James; something that their debut LP, She's In Control, will
testify to.
Here on æUn Joli Mix Pour ToiÆ Pee and Dave go back to their collective roots
with a selection of obscure boogie gems, old school slick 80Æs funked-up pop and
solid gold disco nuggets. From the rolling bassline of Warp 9Æs æNo Man Is An
IslandÆ to the slick guitar-led funk of Sharon ReddÆs æBeat The StreetÆ and
soft-focus guitar solo on Modern RomanceÆs æBurn It UpÆ, ChromeoÆs Joli Mix puts
a smile in your face and a rocket in your pants.
