Two of Japan's most prolific and challenging artists come together for an
exquisite collaboration. At times minimal and acoustic, other times noise
induced drone. One 60 minute track in three movements. Intense.

BORIS WITH MERZBOW: Sun Baked Snow Cave
Originally drawing inspiration from the likes of Pink Floyd's windy sound
collages, Japanese experimentalist Merzbow's name has become practically
synonymous with noise. And now on his third recorded collaboration with J-sludge
pioneers Boris (check Pompeii-era Floyd), the two cross genres in an hourlong
epiphany of smoke and bass. Starting with a spacey, acoustic guitar and
simmering static, the group soon begins buzzing, humming, squealing, feeding
back, clickety-clacking, crackling, harmonizing, crescendoing and crashing. Near
the end of the song, Boris guitarist Wata starts improvising dark, echoey
shoegaze phrases as Merzbow turns up the noise furnace, leaving Wata unphased.
Merzbow mimics life-soundsùlike steam misting off a burner or the landing strip
at Narita Internationalùwhile implied emotions dissipate from Wata's moody minor
chords and spacious phrasing. There's only one track, forcing listeners to
digest Sun baked snow cave (lowercase, please) all at once, like a book, climax
and all.
