     Devorah Day - vocals
     Dominic Duval - double bass

This is as stark and intimate a vocal date as I have ever
heard. Standard presents Devorah Day's voice naked, like
someone alone at home communing with her muse. The resulting
recital is both emotionally harrowing and musically daring.
When Day assays "Just One of Those Things", she twists and
ornaments the melody and finds crevices in the harmonies, the
way someone uninhibited because no one else is listening would.
She's not daring to impress but to express the inner
workingsùboth emotional and musicalùwithin the song. Yes, one
hears the specter of other singers: Billie Holiday certainly on
"Good Morning Heartache" and "Them There Eyes" and Sarah Vaughn
on "Tenderly". But she's not imitating so much as channeling
their spirits, welcoming them into her home. That includes
Kermit the Frog on a wistful, heartfelt "Being Green".

Dominic Duval, her sole musical companion here, has an almost
spectral presence as well. The bassist stands off to the side
and observes and comments on the action. He does not seem so
much to engage her, but rather follows at a distance like a
friendly stray dog. This holds true even on the collectively
improvised "Four Dees" and Day's sole original "Come Closer".
On "Just One of Those...", Day opens unaccompanied (as she does
on most tracks). When she pauses before the second chorus, I
anticipated Duval would then take the lead, laying down a
finger-popping bass line. Instead Day returns still alone for a
few beats before Duval steps in with a fluid, syncopated
phrase. His solos are lyrical and delivered with a full, woody
sound. They sound like Duval's personal version of the stories
     Day has just intoned.

No studio could capture as well the nature of Day's
workùproducer Bob Rusch calls it "enigmatic", and I can't come
up with a better word. The intimate confines of CIMP's Spirit
Room fit the personal nature of the work. And Marc Rusch gets a
sound that's at once trueùyou're not likely to hear bass as
real as this on a recordingùand, for the singer, unforgiving.
Rusch doesn't smooth out Day's voice when it drops suddenly low
and loud; she growls such a note quite effectively on "Dindi".
Nor does he add reverb to cover a slight shrillness when she
rises high. This is how she sounds and in the end it all adds
     up to an intriguing whole.

The tune selection is as quirky as the delivery. Included is a
spontaneous reading of the Beatles' "Yesterday" and Jobim's
"Dindi", which is done with only the slightest touch of bossa
nova. "When Sunny Gets Blue" has never sounded more
confessional, nor "Ain't Misbehavin'" more spontaneously
joyful. Day makes her imprint on these songs. I'm not likely to
hear many of them again without thinking about how she did
them. And I have to admit to finding myself alone in the
kitchen one morning singing "Being Green".
