For most albums that I end up in love with, it isn't love at first
sound. At first listen, I wrinkle my nose. "Fremdkoerper" has had a bit
of the opposite effect. Which isn't to say that I don't love it; I
wouldn't give it a 9 if that were the case. It's that I was kicked-in-
the-stomach impressed the first time I heard it, but that feeling has
tamed a little now that I've listened to it several times. It is still
really really amazing, the best album by far of all the wonderful albums
Mosz has put out.
The name of the album is a perfect explanation of why this happened.
"Fremdkoerper" is German for "foreign body," and the initial thrill of
it gains strength from being so strange and new.
The opening song, "Mutisil," starts out quiet, with low, rumbling sounds
that the unfamiliar ear may not even recognize at first. But the
suspense builds nicely, and then he pounces. One minute, you are walking
through a strange, surreal landscape; the next, lasers shoot out of
nowhere and you find yourself in the middle of a battlezone....
In "Bite Double," you are witnessing the peculiar birthing process of an
alien race. The sounds you hear are the strange sounds of the
interaction between the fighting baby and its helpless mother, who can
only watch as her child struggles from out of the mucous-y egg.
"Skin" is a feast if you had never witnessed eating before. The little
scratchy sounds are teeth hitting bone or breaking the taut skin of a
piece of fruit. A sort of anthropologist from another planet, you are
too interested to turn away from this rather grotesque sight. Fascinated
by this curious process, so surrounded by ritual and meaning, you wonder
what it must feel like to have burnt flesh and mashed plants rushing
down into that terribly queasy bag of acid called a 'stomach.'
It is these evoked images of foreign situations that give this album so
much power. Rehberg may not have followed the usual rules of song-
writing, but that allowed him to create pieces more visionary than any
ordinary song. This is truly a masterpiece.- Eden Hemming Rose
