Experimental improvised music is not a genre that lends itself to the
creation of ╥scenes╙. The number of musicians creating this music is
small with the number of audience members willing to listen seems even
smaller. Because of this it seems that improvisers all over the U.S.
inevitably end up knowing each other, or at least having numerous
friends in common. In a completely unsustainable genre the creation of a
national community has happened almost without any effort whatsoever.
That said, Boston has and continues to be an anomaly, an exception to
the rule that only a tiny number of people in any given city are engaged
in creating this kind of music. With nmperign continually dropping jaws
all over the world and labels like Chloe and Intransitive consistently
releasing new music, Boston has become an independent community, an
almost autonomous entity. This isn╒t to say that the Boston scene has
cut themselves off from the rest of the improvised music world ╨ far
from it. They have, however, carved out their own identifiable niche
within a genre that is often difficult to pin down. Two of the most
active musicians among this fertile musical ground are bassist Mike
   Bullock and cellist Vic Rawlings.

╥Fall of Song╙ is a series of 13 pieces broken up into two sections:
   titles with words (╥As If The╙, ╥When The╙, ╥As We Went To╙) and titles
   made up of blanks and hyphens (╥__ ____ __ _____╙, ╥____-_-____ _____╙).
While it╒s not entirely clear what distinguishes the pieces of either
section from one another, both sections begin the same way with harsh,
sustained tones, given the impression that halfway through the CD we
have started over. The album then plays itself out a second time with
results that are on one level exactly the same but on another wildly
divergent. Each piece ╨ much like their titles ╨ suggests a lack of
╥progress╙ or coordination on the part of the musicians. That isn╒t to
say that the musicians aren╒t working together, but that they are
working together to create music that sounds as though they are not
working together. They resist the usual ideas of drama, contrast, and
resolution and embrace their new language whole-heartedly. There is no
melody, no harmony; only the sound of these two musicians╒ own distinct
   languages.

╥Fall of Song╙ was recorded in an unheated gymnasium in the middle of
brutally cold winter weather and, oddly enough, these are the exact
conditions this music conjures up. Bullock and Rawlings play
deliberately throughout with electronics (open-circuit electronics and
tone generators) nearly incapable of dynamic variation. Rawlings and
Bullock purposefully use primitive electronics and bring their
instrumental playing down to the same level. A seemingly endless barrage
of extended techniques is contained within the 13 brief tracks (none are
over five minutes) and the effect is jarring. This is music completely
committed to desolation and the absence of traditional ideas of
╥beauty╙. The performers rarely sound as though they are listening to
each other, there are no dynamic crescendos ╨ it is two separate
entities bound together by their refusal to coordinate. By going against
everything we have come to expect from improvised music, Bullock and
Rawlings have sidestepped the genre completely and in turn have made a
stunningly beautiful CD. There is as much endless detail and as little
warmth contained in this music as there is within the station wagon
stuffed full of metal pipe on the cover. It is unsettling and even at
times ugly, but is fascinating in its commitment to autonomy.
