| | The eighth and final* release in Moonshine | |
| | Music's long-running and influential "Speed | |
| | Limit 140 BPM+" series, collecting the best | |
| | of early hardcore jungle techno. This volume | |
| | showcases the split of the scene from all | |
| | being "hardcore" into distinctly separate | |
| | "drum & bass" and "happy hardcore" styles, | |
| | and the majority of the tunes on this disc | |
| | are of the latter variety. Not to say that | |
| | they all are; DJ Trace turns in a chilled | |
| | roller called "By Any Means Necessary", and | |
| | Peshay does an uplifting intelligent jungle | |
| | track under his Secrets guise entitled | |
| | "Sunrise". | |
| | | |
| | Favorites here have to include Justin Time's | |
| | wickedly programmed "Help Me", a masterpiece | |
| | of breakbeat editing and sublime piano | |
| | lines. Also two older tunes included | |
| | here from 1993, by DJ Slam ("Looking Into The | |
| | Light") and Citadel Of Kaos ("Warped"). | |
| | | |
| | Overall, though, this volume does not reach | |
| | the dizzying highs that the earlier releases | |
| | did, as many of the tracks are annoyingly | |
| | repetitive and simplistic, which would become | |
| | even more apparent as the happy hardcore | |
| | scene wore on. Still though, it's worth at | |
| | least a listen or two. | |

| | Not quite. The Speed Limit 140 BPM+ series | |
| | lived on in one form or another for several | |
| | years on. | |
| | | |
| | A) A one-shot compilation entitled "Law Of | |
| | The Jungle" was released bearing the SL140+ | |
| | mark, and featured mainly tunes from the SOUR | |
| | back catalogue (Sound Of The Underground | |
| | Recordings, not us!). No further volumes | |
| | were ever released. | |
| | | |
| | B) After the final volume of SL140+ was | |
| | released, a new series started up showcasing | |
| | the happy hardcore sound, entitled "Happy 2B | |
| | Hardcore". Each disc contained around 16 | |
| | tracks, all continously mixed by Canadian DJ | |
| | Anabolic Frolic, and each one featured the | |
| | same tiled smiley-face cover (a throwback to | |
| | the cover of SL140+ Vol. 2). Additionally, | |
| | the backs bore the SL140+ logo, along with | |
| | the tagline "Ride The Ultrabeat"... from the | |
| | very first SL140+ compilation. This series | |
| | ran for seven volumes total, plus one | |
| | side-project DVD mixed by Scott Brown. | |
| | | |
| | C) There were two UK-only releases of "Speed | |
| | Limit Classics". The first volume collected | |
| | several tunes from the US releases of Volume | |
| | 4 and Volume 7, while the second volume was a | |
| | direct copy of the US Volume 5, albeit with | |
| | changed artwork. | |
| | | |
| | D) Finally, 2001 saw the release of "Speed | |
| | Limit 140 BPM+: The New Era", a continously | |
| | mixed disc from oldskool hardcore DJ | |
| | Slipmatt. However, the emphasis on hardcore, | |
| | jungle, and happy styles was completely | |
| | removed, and this mix was 70+ minutes of | |
| | bland, uninspired hard house. A disgrace to | |
| | the good name of SL140+. Avoid at all costs. | |
