│ Sneaky ││
│ April 4th ││
│ For the past few years Ollie Lewis (better known as his DJ ││
│ alias Sneaky) has played a pivotal part in the Brighton ││
│ breaks scene and beyond. Ollie got his first taste for dance ││
│ music in 1997 when he moved to Brighton to start university. ││
│ Every night of the week there was a club night taking place, ││
│ but it was one in particular, the Big Beat Boutique, that ││
│ convinced Ollie of a career in music. Ollie became a diehard ││
│ fan of the club and one DJ in particular, Fatboy Slim, ││
│ convinced Ollie to pick up the turntables and start spinning ││
│ records. ││
│ ││
│ When the Big Beat scene died out, Ollie became hooked on the ││
│ sound of the emerging Nu Skool Breaks scene. Inspired by the ││
│ futuristic funk of ILS, Tipper and labels such as Marine ││
│ Parade and TCR, Ollie (along with his long running partner ││
│ in crime Pete B) set up his first club night, Plan B, at the ││
│ legendary Brighton venue Concorde 2 in January 2000. Plan B ││
│ saw debut Brighton performances from DJ Hyper and Dark Globe ││
│ (live), as well as sets from scene luminaries Freq Nasty, ││
│ Rennie Pilgrem, Adam Freeland and BLIM. The night ran for ││
│ over a year and is regarded by many as the one of the first ││
│ breaks nights to have been established on the south coast, ││
│ as well as securing Ollie's reputation as a key figure in ││
│ Brighton?ÇÖs music scene. The success of Plan B led to DJ ││
│ sets at many of Brighton?ÇÖs most reputed club nights, ││
│ including the Big Beat Boutique, Supercharged, Bust The Box ││
│ and Gogglez, as well as a residency at the Concorde 2, ││
│ playing alongside legends such as Coldcut, Smith & Mighty, ││
│ Timo Mass and the Jungle Brothers. ││
│ ││
│ After graduating from University in 2002, Ollie joined ││
│ forces with Supercharged and Against The Grain, the two ││
│ labels owned by Krafty Kuts and Skool Of Thought as ││
│ Assistant Label Manager. Ollie is now a key figure at the ││
│ labels and played a pivotal role in the success of the ││
│ Freestylers singles 'Get A Life' and 'Push Up' (which ││
│ reached no. 22 in the UK chart and no. 6 in Australian ││
│ chart), and the Freestylers album 'Raw As F**k'. As well as ││
│ being a driving force behind the labels, Ollie is also ││
│ resident at the highly respected Supercharged club night and ││
│ its affiliated events. Having been resident for nearly two ││
│ years, Ollie has played alongside the majority of the breaks ││
│ scene's key players, including Hybrid, Tayo, Freestylers, ││
│ Stanton Warriors, Tom Middleton and the Plump DJs. In 2003, ││
│ Ollie spread his wings further with a guest slot at Rennie ││
│ Pilgrem and Meat Katie's infamous breaks all nighter Hum, ││
│ with a return visit taking place this October. ││
│ ││
│ Whilst continuing with his hard work for Supercharged and ││
│ Against The Grain, Ollie also presents the radio show 'Break ││
│ Yourself' alongside Pete B on Brighton's premier radio ││
│ station Juice 107.2 FM. The show has now been running for ││
│ just over a year and features the best in breaks along with ││
│ guest mixes from the scene's movers and shakers including ││
│ Evil Nine, Will Saul, Friendly and Precision Cuts. The show ││
│ is also streamed on the internet and has achieved a ││
│ worldwide audience with listeners from South America, USA, ││
│ Australia and Japan ││
│ ││
│ With all this going on, Ollie has still found time to work ││
│ on his own music. The initial response so far has been great ││
│ from colleagues Krafty Kuts and Skool Of Thought. Ollie's ││
│ first, as yet untitled, 12" will be hitting the streets in ││
│ the not too distance future. Plans are also in the pipeline ││
│ for collaboration work with Evil Nine and remixes for Skool ││
│ Of Thought and Bushy (who is signed to the respected ││
│ Brighton label Catskills). ││
│ ││
│ With all aspects of Ollie's career continuing to progress, ││
│ the future looks very bright indeed for the man they call ││
│ Sneaky! ││
