The second release from this In The Nursery side project continues
to embrace contemporary dance music trends, while retaining the
elements of classical and orchestral music that have made ITN
unique.
It's this background that adds an extra dimension to the music --
for instance, the inclusion of strings in the retro-industrial-goth
title track gives it an emotional depth and brooding anxiety far
beyond that of typical keyboard-and-beatbox compositions. But in
spite of the sporadic appearance of familiar elements (i.e.:
orchestral sounds and whispered, breathy Gallic female vocals), Les
Jumeaux give ITN the freedom to embrace modern musical trends and
experiment with them.
That's how we get the mesmeric "Strange", a combination of
trip-hop, latter-era new wave vocals and rich, mournful
soundtrack-quality soundscapes. There's also the earthy
jazz-ambience of "Maline", which should appeal to Barry Adamson
fans...but then, so will the rest of the disc. "Futur" gives
orchestral solidity to a minimal, textured keyboard composition,
and the Beaumont Hannant remix makes it a bit poppier. "Cyflo"
combines haunting solemnity with precise, machine-like rhythms and
densely-layered keyboards, painting a picture in multiple
dimensions.
As a rule, "Cobalt" will show you that synthesisers and samplers
can create lasting art, that intricate martial rhythms can be
employed with great subtlety and taste, and that elements of
contemporary DJ culture can be incorporated into orchestral music -
and in the hands of skilled artists, can work brilliantly.
