The Idea behind Nervous Nellie
For those who don't know Nervous Nellie it is not only an expression for
somebody who is overly anxious, it is also the name of a Swedish rock band which
has its base in the country's capitol Stockholm. Their music has been described
by many as "indie rock", "pop", "alternative" and even "country punk".
Nervous Nellie's musical style is a reaction to their musical socialization,
much in the category of the eighties and nineties European and American
alternative scenes. The aim has always been to focus on writing simple,
contemporary and modern songs with melody. Lyrically they explore important
everyday topics such as love & hate, nonsense, politics and anything else that
might come to mind. Nervous Nellie always expresses feelings that you should
never take yourself too seriously and that there's hope even when being down and
out.
Internationally rooted - coming from Sweden
Interestingly, drummer Andy is the only one in the band actually born in Sweden.
While Henrik and his younger brother Magnus grew up in Chicago bopping back and
forth across the Atlantic Ocean, bass player Manne was born in Chile and was
adopted adopted to Sweden. The band officially started out back in 2002 after
lead singer Henrik had spent some time playing in a Minneapolis based band
called The Milk Babies.
Best Newcomer Act
In 2004 Nervous Nellie decided to take matters into their own hands and started
their very own label named Honkyjonx Records and released the band's first EP
called "The Peace Pipe EP". Since then Nervous Nellie have established
themselves as a hardworking live act with numerous European tours to date.
Having won the international Emergenza newcomer contest in 2003 - Nervous Nellie
was allowed to call themselves "Best Newcomer Act". In the summer of 2004 they
toured in the US on The Vans Warped Tour alongside established acts such as Bad
Religion, The Talk and The International Noise Conspiracy. After being
approached by producers John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr, Breeders) and Steve Fisk
(Screaming Trees, Nirvana) the band came in contact with American indie label
Go-Kart Records who signed them shortly after.
