██▌▄▀█ Jeff Mills as nothing more than a human loop machine, ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ a dancefloor-driven cyborg who pumps out funky, ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ pounding techno like the rest of us exhale carbon ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ dioxide. In reality, Detroit techno's most enduring ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ and prolific star can be a big ol' softy when he ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ wants. Last year's "From the 21st" outing on Sony ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Japan leavened the percussive pounding of 1998's ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ "Purposemaker Compilation" with the kind of ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ atmosphere and nuance one usually associates with a ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Derrick May or a Stacey Pullen. This new German ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ import leans even more heavily on the Motor City's ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ romantic, soulful legacy. The concept this time - for ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Mills is something of a conceptualist - is ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ psychology; each of the 14 tracks is meant to ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ represent a different aspect of his personality. Such ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ interpretive baggage may seem hokey, but once you've ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ blogged through the snippets of dialogue between ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Mills and his shrink that adorn the thick booklet, ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ you'll have a hard time not noticing that the tracks ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ do seem to describe intellectual and emotional ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ traits. Within the space of only three tracks, then, ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ we move from the bipolar strings-and-loops ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ scrappiness of "Detached" to the layered, logical ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ progression of "Systematic" to the dank rattle of ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ "Cometh (only)." Older tracks such as "Condor to ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Mallorca," which helped engender the popular ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ stereotype of Mills-the-machine when it was released ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ on the seminal "Waveform Transmission 3" album, seem ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ less punishing in the context of this often lush LP. ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Serene, midtempo tracks such as "With/Dove" and ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ prickly, harder ones like "Solara" dispatch ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ percussive and melodic hooks like audio timebombs ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ that lodge in your head; you know they've detonated ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ when you find yourself walking to the cadences of a ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ Mills track you played hours before. If the album has ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ a flaw, it's the sense of familiarity; despite the ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ changes in tempo, intensity and, yes, psychology, ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ there's a sameness to the producer's sound that makes ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ one LP seem like another. Only three of "Lifelike"'s ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ 14 tracks appeared on "From the 21st," but I kept ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ having to switch back and forth between the discs to ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ get a handle on their differences. Obsessive fans ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ will probably buy both albums regardless, but curious ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ newcomers should pick up the cheaper, longer, more ░██▌▄▀
██▌▄▀█ diverse "Lifelike." ░██▌▄▀
