Release Notes:
And starts with a bang, that's for sure! The original "Slingshot"
is a seriously cool song, that is every bit as good as the best
cover here. In fact all of the originals (sans "Zambezi" perhaps)
on this disc are more satisfying, but "Slingshot" is simply an
amazing performance that really shows Spy-Fi firing all 8
cylinders, and with any luck will lead the commercial version of
the album.
Overall, the covers work better too, and all of the medleys are
top notch. The "Dragnet" swing transition to a bop/surf take of
"007" is especially breathtaking. "Mission Impossible" is a little
too hyper, and "Get Smart" feels drunk (is that possible?), but "A
Shot In The Dark" walks on the lounge side without feeling silly.
"Munsters / Hawaii 5-0" is obvious, yet essential.
From this collection, 8 or 9 tracks should join the best from
volume 1 and Spy-Fi will have a pretty solid debut album, that
should help their mission in advancing spy, detective, and surf
instrumental music, though a female vocal or two could give just
the right umph!
