casual tricky fans think of "hell is round the corner" as "that
track that sounds like portishead," mostly because it uses the
same isaac hayes sample as "glory box." attentive listeners might
also notice that the song shares many of its lyrics with massive
attack's "eurochild," which tricky co-wrote. but the song's real
distinction is the way it perfectly encapsulates the sound of
"maxinquaye": loping hip-hop rhythms, distorted samples, wicked
wit and listless sensuality.
it's therefore all the more disturbing to hear tricky tke the
track into altogether more dangerous territory on the "hell &
water" mix. twittering horror-movie strings, ominous synth builds,
subdued percussion ("distant drums bring the news of a kill
tonight") and flattened-out dynamics drain the song of its pop
appeal and turn tricky and martina's vocals into an uneasy
conversation carried out in a dark alley.
elsewhere on this four-track ep, though, tricky and his american
hip-hop cousins have a bit of a laugh. "psychosis" and "tonite is
a special nite" are a one-two punch of haunted-house atmospherics,
spooky sampladelica and drunken free association. these tracks
won't do much to break tricky with the rap mainstream, but by
teaming up with prince paul and his graveyard posse, tricky has
opened up the lines of communication between two continents of
avant-garde heads.
