question: what do you get if you take the best music from the 70's,
80's and 90's, and make it year 2000 compliant? answer: "the future
ain't the same as it used 2 b"
no, not a surrealist's punchline but the title of the debut long
player on the respected laws of motion label from trio kaidi
tatham, alex phountzi and orin walters. collectively known as neon
phusion, the three have been holed up in the basement of an acton
industrial estate putting together the latest inspired contribution
from west london's incestuous music scene - the
infamous house not house scene.
the album is a glorious mish mash of old and new styles; think
deodato's jazzfunk with filtered rhythms and moody sub bass,
soulful downtempo numbers through to full on warped moog mayhem.
and that's just a pinch of the output the three are capable of.
mixing up the genres is a theme running throughout the album and as
orin states 'that's really the phusion element. alex's drum and
bass, my house and kaidi's jazz all joined together'. Add in guest
vocals from reggae's dom ricardo, and sylvia tella on the single
"electric lady", and the blend thickens. alex, mindful of dance music's
limited shelflife says, 'we wanted to do something you can listen
to at home as well. as an album it doesn't really cover all the
more standard dancefloor stuff we can do but you need to get the
right balance.
"NEON PHUSION are KAIDI TATHAM, ALEX PHOUNTZI and ORIN WALTERS.
They have recorded as members of BUGZ IN THE ATTIC, LIKWID BIZKIT,
AFRONAUGHTS and HERBALISER. THE definitive record in the whole West
London, broken beat, house not house scene. ESSENTIAL."
