     brooklyn funk essentials is an amazingly versatile collective with 
     an eclectic performing style and control of a number of genres,    
     including funk, soul, acid jazz, folk, dub, hip-hop, rap, latin,   
     reggae and ska.                                                    
                                                                        
     initially created as a studio side project in 1993 by arthur baker 
     and lati kronlund, the collective was a hit on the new york city   
     live scene. they released ôcool and steady and easyö, their first  
     album, the following year, then gave us the successful 1995        
     underground hit single ôthe creator has a master planö. this was   
     followed in 1998 by the turkish music inspired ôin the buzz bagö,  
     and their last release was ômake æem like itö in 2000.             
                                                                        
     the 23 members of brooklyn funk essentials include vocalists,      
     poets, musicians and djÆs. the original line-up featured vocalist  
     and dancing queen joi cardwell, vocalist and poet hanifa ôsha-keyö 
     robinson and reggae and rap vocalist daniel ôpapa deeö wahlgren,   
     with dub poet everton sylvester and poet david allen. dj jazzy     
     nice was on turntables, paul shapiro on tenor saxophone and flute, 
     josh roseman on trombone, bob ôbassyö brachmann on trumpet and     
     keyboard, yuka honda also on keyboard, yancy drew lamber on drums, 
     e.j.rodriguez on percussion, and lars ôlatiö kronlund on bass also 
     serving as the musical director.                                   
                                                                        
     achieving its first success in europe on a dorado label, the album 
     ôcool and steady and easyö was later released in the us under rca  
     groovetown. it was voted billboardÆs best r&b album of the year,   
     and at the same time was enjoying international acclaim for the    
     single ôthe creator has a master planö, a distinctive rendition of 
     the pharoah sanders classic. they went on to tour europe, with atn 
     stadwijk replacing yuka honda on keyboards and stephanie mckay     
     taking joi cardwellÆs place on lead vocals. also contributing to   
     the group are andre atkins on trombone, tony allen on percussion,  
     mark adams on keyboards, desmond foster on guitar and paul ôziggyö 
     zerang acting as the sound engineer.
