frenchman chris joss, a completely self-taught
multi-instrumentalist and autonomous studio producer, is not
exactly a newcomer to the global music scene. having lived in both
paris and london in the early nineties, joss digested the vibrant
music scenes of each city while working as a sound engineer and
playing with several bands.
in 1996 chris joss recorded his first album the man with a
suitcase, the soundtrack to an imaginary 60's television series,
inspired by the likes of lalo schifrin, john barry, quincy jones,
laurie johnson and many others. however, it took a move back to
france in 1998 for the album to be released in 1999 on independent
label pulp flavor. the man with a suitcase and bombay by bus, a
four track vinyl ep, received fantastic reviews and tremendous
airplay.
chris joss followed up with his sophomore effort dr rhythm, a 15
track double lp released discreetly in 2002 by italian label irma
records. encompassing all his main musical influences including
electronica, breakbeat, acid jazz, and soundtrack music dr rhythm
upped the ante for joss' musical catalogue. irma records soon
released an ep for joss with remixes by madrid de los austrias and
dublex inc.
in march 2004 chris joss' stunning third album, you've been
spiked, was finally complete and released by cristal records. with
its thick funky bass lines, wah-wah guitars, and rhodes and
hammond riffs pulsating overtop rootsy drums, this album is a
vibrant tribute to 1960's and 1970's dance music. obscure samples,
turntable scratching, retro-futuristic ambience, and the lush
vocals of the enigmatic cosmika join in to complete a resolutely
cinematic soundscape.
now chris joss' you've been spiked is re-released by esl music as
an enhanced-multimedia disc that includes two bonus tracks
selected from the man with the suitcase and the video for the
raucous keyboard infected breakbeat swinger "discotheque dancing."
with you've been spiked chris joss realizes a brilliant mix
between old school and new school. vintage psychedelic 60's
boogie, blaxploitation funk, car chase soundtracks, atmospheric
easy listening, and hip-hop breakbeats combine seamlessly to
create an unforgettable sonic experience. a vinyl ep of remixes by
ursula 1000 & fort knox five comes out in march 05 on esl music.
