the first vinyl outing from peace feast industries (i.e. tim lee)
was "no hassle from the man" which was released on white label in
november 1990. at this point tim was already becoming bored of
being a house dj and dreamt of a party where tracks as quirky as
the ones he was making in his home studio would rock the dance
floor. after three and a half years of playing in bands, dj'ing
for other people and failing to get anything released, tim
realised he could only make his dream come true by doing it
himself. also he got sacked from the club where he was resident,
"jazz in the box", which made the decision to go it alone a bit
easier!
tim got together with nottingham's best underground beats posse,
the phat wax crew, and avant-garde hosts brain ticket and threw
the first tummy touch party (subtitled "a unique experience of
funkiness") at the staircase, a small night club in the middle of
nottingham's all night fruit market, in june 1994. the first
release on tim's record label "peace feast" followed soon after.
three releases and a dozen outrageous parties later tim buggered
off to south america to recover. the posse left behind in
nottingham carried on the parties as "fever" which is going strong
to this day. on his return tim managed two releases on peace feast
while staying with his mum in cambridge, but wasn't allowed to
throw any parties in case the cats got scared.
tim finally moved to london at the end of 1995 and started
throwing parties in his warehouse hang out immediately. the
neighbours soon cracked so tim got together with a like minded
west london party posse, boomba makao, and started having parties
in illegal venues in shoreditch. in july 1997 tim, boomba makao
and clap (faze action and the idjut boys) joined forces and
started the club now known as tummy touch at the areas newest
disco, 333. the venue had been one of londons sleaziest gay clubs,
the london apprentice, for 16 years, but commercial pressures and
reluctance by the regulars to accept a mixed crowd forced the club
to go straight in may 1997.
tummy touch, the record label, was launched in july 1996 almost by
accident. tony global, a long time friend and temporary label
manager of peace feast, had promised to do two tracks of low down
& dirty, far-out-funk for peace feast. however, due to the
ridiculous working practices of mr lee, the first time tim heard
the tracks was at the mastering studio on the day of the cut.
imagine tims' confusion as he listened to two up-tempo, discofied,
balearic floor fillers╓peace feast had prided itself on providing
the most difficult to play dance music around, but this stuff was
far too accessible. after toying with the idea of cutting it at
the wrong speed, tim decided that forming a new record label was
the better plan. naming the label, which was to provide an outlet
for party music, after the parties that tim had been throwing was
an obvious step.
