journal de tokyo is an inclusive album because of the nature of its
construction. based loosely around fragments of writing by the japanese
author hyakken uchida -- whose works are read at intervals in japanese
and french by nexus6 and her compatriot matriko tajiri -- this album
is best heard, as yuko herself describes it in the liner notes,
as "not only a cd but a cassette tape." like taping directly from
the radio, disparate fragments coalesce and sit uneasily next to each
other, creating often jarring transitions and moments where everything,
against all odds, comes together. nexus6 constructed this entire album
on tape, and it shows -- the sounds of rewinding, stopping, and
tape unfurling are all over this record.
