| One of the latest and probably most beautiful works of Chet Baker |
| is Diane (1985), where he plays together with world-renowned |
| Canadian free jazz pianist Paul Bley, creating an almost magical |
| piece of soul grabbing music. Bley is surprisingly restrained in |
| this setting, and absence of a rhythm section gives the album a |
| warm, intimate feel. This album is full of lush melodies, which |
| Chet Baker so elegantly layers upon Bley's magnificent piano solos |
| with impeccable timing and smoothness. From first note to last, |
| there is an exceptional musical chemistry between the two featured |
| soloists, so that in both quality and appeal Diane is not unlike |
| the now legendary Steal Away album by Charlie Haden and Hank |
| Jones. Only one of the eight tracks has Baker on vocals, but it is |
| a haunting rendition of "You Go to my Head". Baker's vocal style |
| is unique and unmistakable -- at times it seems like he's hanging |
| onto the melody by his fingernails. He wraps his heart and soul |
| around these tunes and lyrics, going 'inside' so deeply that it's |
| almost like there's no one else in the world but him as he takes |
| each one and makes it his own, as few other vocalists before or |
| since have been able to do. This is one of the finest works of the |
| late-period Chet; he sadly passed away 3 years later. There is |
| famous story regarding these two; soon after recording this album |
| in Copenhagen, Baker and Bley performed together in Toronto. |
| Legend has it that Chet fell asleep on stage during the |
| performance, and eventually had to be carried off. |
