| | The prime death metal providers from old Chicago town have become |
| | fully operational once again in the new millennium although from |
| | the classic line-up itÆs only the guitar player Jeremy Wagner that |
| | has survived. The band fans should have no worries, though, as the |
| | man has surrounded himself with very capable musicians coming from |
| | some of the most reputable names on the extreme metal scene like |
| | Gorgasm, Jungle Rot, Chimaira, and Disgorge among whom one will |
| | recognize the ôinfernalö throat Damian Leski, the Gorgasm vocalist |
| | who perfectly fills in the vacated shoes of the sadly departed Joe |
| | Ptacek (R.I.P.). |

| | The comeback album was a passable affair Wagner more concerned |
| | about resuscitating the stripped-down, immediate spirit of the |
| | first three efforts rather than stepping the pedal on the |
| | technicality akin to last two instalments. Depending on the |
| | preferences, this may have been the better option for some of the |
| | fans out there, but on the album reviewed here the guys have |
| | increased the pleasant surprises to the point that it easily |
| | reaches the loftier aspirations of ôLoathingö and ôGrotesque |
| | Blessingsö on the most inspired moments. |
| | |
| | The angular twisted riffage at the start of ôThe Meek Shall Inherit |
| | Shitö already tells a different story, and this short stylish |
| | shredder could have been easily taken out of ôLoathingö, with |
| | stomping passages and brief melodic lead pyrotechnics greatly |
| | helping on the side. ôThe Bunkerö is a face-melting brutalizer, not |
| | much room for sophistication on it, but the title-track is another |
| | great more technical proposition with hyper-active riffs |
| | interlacing with heavy doom-laden stopovers, the virtuous leads the |
| | requisite more melodic mediator. ôOutback Incest Clanö embraces the |
| | more immediate short format again the alternation between the two |
| | sides kept in place with ôMalicious Meatholesö, a technical death |
| | metal shred-fest of the highest order, a fascinating shape-shifter |
| | that would enchant even the lads from Theory in Practice and |
| | Martyr, the band closing this exemplary showdown with a |
| | breath-taking lyrical finale. |

| | ôBlast Frozenö is 2-min of spastic polished brutality before ôThe |
| | Necropantsö enters a more challenging realm, one that offers |
| | technical mid-paced stomps with emphasis on melody, the guys |
| | amazingly exuding maximum technical quirks from such an |
| | anti-climactic delivery, with a little help from a couple of more |
| | energetic outbursts. ôThe Carrion Eatersö violates the alternation |
| | rules by serving more intricate riffs with an imposing doomy |
| | section making things even more interesting, and they stay that way |
| | with ôRussian Sleep Experimentö, the next in line less ordinary |
| | number with twisted brutal riff-patterns circling around the |
| | listener who will be reminded of the dazzling brutality movement |
| | (Suffocation, Cryptopsy, Grotesque, Decrepit Birth, etc.) in no |
| | time, the band beating said acts in their own game with brilliant |
| | overlapping segments. ôHellÆs Handpuppetsö is another |
| | super-technical showdown after overcoming a lyrical balladic intro, |
| | the guys shooting an ingenious riff after another in such a quick |
| | succession that all will welcome the arrival of the short ambient |
| | instrumental ôBeneath Antarctic Iceö which closes the whole saga if |
| | we exclude the remastered version of the title-track from the |
| | bandÆs debut added as a bonus. |
| | |
| | ThatÆs way more like it, the band sounding invigorated and |
| | inspired, producing way more than the obligatory reunion stunt. In |
| | the end this is more of an amalgam of their entire past repertoire, |
| | touching base with nearly every full-length along the way, |
| | logically paying more attention to their final, more engaging |
| | period. A very dexterously stitched mixture fully displaying the |
| | musiciansÆ skills, showing them well equipped to race with both the |
| | sprung new and the arisen old stars on the current metal horizon. |
| | All hopes fixed, all promises fulfilled, the retro death metal |
| | wagon carries on on full-throttle, with more pleasant surprises |
| | hopefully in stall in the future. |
