▐█ For many people, the band Elysian Fields is a bit too somber, █▌
▐█ moody, or dark. Or perhaps just too sultry. TheyÆre not a █▌
▐█ particularly menacing group. In fact, there is absolutely no █▌
▐█ musical menace found on any of their discs. But their █▌
▐█ Beatnik-nouveau sound can definitely turn away some listeners. █▌
▐█ Enter The Stares, a quartet who sounds quite a bit like them, █▌
▐█ minus any hint of Beatnik and with a much more friendly feel to █▌
▐█ them. They wonÆt blow you away with amazing musicianship, but █▌
▐█ their songcraft will warm the soul, as they blend dreamy æ60s █▌
▐█ pop with the psychedelic pop that made the previously mentioned █▌
▐█ band so appealing. In fact, opener ôDisconnected Againö sounds █▌
▐█ eerily like a track from Dreams That Breathe Your Name entitled █▌
▐█ ôNarcosmicoma.ö █▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ The StaresÆs friendlier leanings often are reminiscent of █▌
▐█ new-found pop gems Eisley, mixed with the ever-popular █▌
▐█ Cranberries. Each track is eerily simple in terms of individual █▌
▐█ instrumentation, but takes on a whole new feel as each bit is █▌
▐█ added. The main ôproblemö with the disc is that each track seems █▌
▐█ to have multiple definite endings. Just when you think a track █▌
▐█ is over, should be over, it goes on for another minute. What █▌
▐█ happens in that minute is almost always a departure from the █▌
▐█ previous few minutes of said track. It seems almost as if this █▌
▐█ album could have been 11 tracks instead of 8. But just because █▌
▐█ the music changes doesnÆt mean the song has to, and that might, █▌
▐█ in the end, help to make this a more compelling listen. █▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ By the way, heard-but-not-seen legend Eyvind Kang creates the █▌
▐█ groupÆs strings and woodwinds, which are startlingly beautiful █▌
▐█ and soft. Truly a man whose credits are innumerable and whose █▌
▐█ accolades are minimal, it only seems fair to give him almost as █▌
▐█ much credit for this album as the actual members of the group. █▌
▐█ This album could have been fairly decent, but his subtle █▌
▐█ additions to each track make it that much better. Then again, █▌
▐█ main songwriters and vocalists Angie Benintendi and Drew █▌
▐█ Whittemore are no slouches either. █▌
▐█ █▌
▐█ In the end, Spine to Sea is an album worthy of any attention it █▌
▐█ gets, but is most likely to be passed over by a lot of people █▌
▐█ who should hear it. A pop gem in a world full of █▌
▐█ bottom-of-the-shoe-feeding bubblegum pop, The StaresÆs Spine to █▌
▐█ Sea is what simplicity and pop genius can create when you let █▌
▐█ your mind wander just enough. █▌
