| France is hardly the hot spot of European jazz and thus, it is |
| likely that many who read these pages have never heard of French |
| reedist Matthieu Donarier. Donarier's trio, pairing him with |
| guitarist Manu Codjia and drummer Joe Quitzke, have been playing |
| together for seven years and these adventures have led to concise |
| and intuitive results. Optic Topic, their first recorded |
| document, focuses on mood with frequent visits to opaque spaces |
| where currents shuffle underneath the surface, though they remain |
| unafraid to venture into bold excursions. |

| The compositions, with all but one written by Donarier, are |
| influenced by a variety of sources, most notably Donarier's |
| travels in the Middle East, Spain, and Canada, thus providing a |
| twist on Western sensibilities. These twelve mostly brief tracks |
| are not from the theme-solo-theme school, but feature melodic |
| fragments guided by nuance and flexibility, though the real joy is |
| the group's collective energy. While Donarier, with various |
| saxes and clarinets, favors lyrical flights and Quitzke provides |
| pulse and color, Codjia is the focal point. He fills in the |
| spaces wisely, eschewing overbearing guitar hysterics, with |
| shifting effects-laden shapes, flexible ostinato patterns, and |
| incisive, searing solo shards. |

| The session's most lasting tracks are those that offer the most |
| spunk. The second track, "La Chute", is the perfect example, with |
| Codjia setting the pace and hanging tough (with brief string taps |
| in the manner of his countryman, Marc Ducret) as the burgeoning |
| force sparks under Quitzke's momentum and Donarier's soprano |
| coils. The trio also looks to environments laid out by Tim Berne |
| (an obvious influence) on the tenor-lead "OpticTopic", with |
| Donarier setting the initial knotty construct, as Codjia doubles |
| it and Quitzke sets down the rhythm to send the trio off on a |
| tear. The darting rhythmic interplay forged by the front-line |
| also appears again on "Saveur eXquise", further spurred on by |
| Quitzke's frisky accentuation. "Jamais Contente" is another high |
| point, with Codjia's spiky torrents motivating Quitzke, who |
| punches out matching rhythmic shifts before an unexpected change |
| of pace that draws muted clarinet smoke from Donarier. And for |
| folk elements, look no further than "Mail Planet", with Codjia's |
| muted plucks setting the groove for Donarier's tenor flights. |

| As for murkier atmospheres, the group excels on "Los Que Faltan", |
| a melancholy ballad written by Quitzke, certainly the trio's most |
| forlorn moment. Perhaps the most complex of the tracks here, and |
| arguably the record's strongest, is "Histoire d'un Jour", which |
| initially commences with a somber introductory theme before the |
| group takes a new route as QuitzkeÆ*'s intermittent tinklings, |
| Codjia's soundwaves, and Donarier's distant tenor sings sweetly. |
| This somewhat ominous forecast eventually turns its focus to |
| Codjia, whose lunar viewing, Torn/Frisell-like solo swells over a |
| hazy landscape, perfectly concluded by its conjoining track, the |
| beautifully introspective "La Vie Sauve". This one is a sleeper |
| for sure; let's hope that they don't wait seven years to make |
| another record! |
