Collabs 400 is the fourth in a series of releases which
sees Speedy J working together with other producers. This
release unites Speedy with one of France's great
production talents and ex-half of The Micronauts, George
Issakidis.
George Issakadis, when working as The Micronauts, was
responsible for such classic tracks as "The Jazz" and
"The Jag" as well as album "Bleep To Bleep" and a myriad
of stunning remixes for the likes of The Chemical
Brothers, OMD, Death In Vegas, Underworld and 16B. Now
George can be found at the helm of his new label project
"The Republic of Desire" which has witnessed recent 12"
releases from him, Midnight Mike and Jason Haas and has
provided twisted electronic tracks for the more daring
and innovative DJs such as James Holden, Ivan Smagghe,
and Damian Lazarus.
Speedy J (aka Jochem Paap) should need little
introduction by now. He first came to prominence through
his work on Richie Hawtin's fledgling Plus 8 label as the
first oversees producer to grace the imprint. Since then
he's been responsible for an expansive catalogue of work
that has transcended genre pigeonholes. His Collabs
series has recently seen him release with Chris Liebing
(as Collabs 300 with an album project as Collabs 3000 due
later this year), with Literon as 200 and the first
Collabs project "100" with Sweden's Adam Beyer. Now The
Republic of Desire's George Issakidis adds a new French
dimension to proceedings with Speedy J as Collabs 400
takes shape.
A1) Looks Something Like You building up from a hypnotic,
mid tempo groove, Speedy J and George Issakidis take the
dancefloor with a slow rising wave of noise that floods
the speakers only to give into purely hedonistic and
glitched acid. Throbbing, sexual and druggy.
B1) Understand What I'm Saying,the flipside is a heady
track with a slow yet tight bass line jumping between 6/8
and 4/4 rhythms, tripping the mind and bodies of an
unsuspecting crowd over sexy, misheard voices. Laced with
wildly phased out percussion, Speedy J and Issakidis once
again succeed in making a profoundly intoxicating
hallucinogen.
